HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
hi im looking for a bit of advise...
i bought a ocz modular 500w about 6 weeks ago to put in my build (as below) and i noticed an annoying rattling sound.. took me all night to work out its coming from my PSU fan! (great!)
"Phenom 550
Lian Li v351
Big Shuriken big"
but when i tilt my case up about 30° it stops... now im posting on this forum for advise on 2 things..
1, how can i fix this cheaply.. could i replace the PSU fan?
2, what alternative psu would be recommend.. i prefer modular becuase its tight in the V351 and i can spend max £50-60?
im temped to just but antec NSK 2480 which includes a 350 earthwatts psu and save my Lian li case for a sandy bridge build later in the year.. Maybe?
:juggle:
i am disappointed because i feel like im wasting money :help:

If it is under warranty then you could send it back but, If you don't want to be without a working PC or spend a fortune on a new PSU I would just fit a new fan.
It might just be a piece of something inside the PSU that is loose or rattling rather then the fan itself.
If you do open up the PSU just be aware they can store high voltages for a good while but, other than that it is no different to fitting a normal case fan.

being an idiot.. i voided my warranty!!! opened it up and looked for random foder non was found...
looks like a fan replacement or new psu!!
which goes back to my original question, not sure whats best
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
The older OCZ PSUs used a sleeve bearing fan whereas the newer StealthXStream II PSUs use a ball bearing fan.
Sleeve bearing fans tend to wear out quicker but six weeks seems a very short period for this to happen in!

In that case - Change the fan. Has to be worth replacing the fan if it is only 6 weeks old.

ive had a lil google search and found that 1 other person reporting the same problem as me.. probably a bad batch or something!
sounds cliché lol but i want this in my living room as a htpc
im only running a ATI 4770, 1 hd, 1 dvd drive, so i know i dont need masses of power...
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
Well if you voided the warranty replaceing the fan is your best bet.
The fan will ether be soldered in or plugged in, normally only a two pin connection as they don't bother with the rpm monitor.
to replace it you can basically use any fan of the same size, but ideally I'd look for the same rpm as well.
Sound like something is catching or the baring is damaged, which is the other big problem with sleeve baring, they can be damaged more easily from sharp impacts (drop the fan) or even just shaking it about.
replacing the fan in a cpu is not a hard thing to do, esp if it's a plug type, or cut the wires and solder in the new fan is it's a soldered in type.

do you think this will do the job?

the final part in this problem is finding somewhere that sells it! lol
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
just remove the void if removed sticker and send it back, its down to them to prove it had one to start with, mistakes happen ;)
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
i dont think i'll get away with it lol!
i wouldnt advise anyone to buy this PSU, quite a lot of people having similar issues on google.
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
yoiu could always email the RMA dept and tell them its faulty (fan) but the seal is broken so you dont want to send it unless they will honor the warranty
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
Yes that Kama FLEX 135 looks good, go for the 1600rpm model as the original fan is an 1800rpm fan
You could fit a normal 120mm or 140mm in there, you'll just have to get creative with mounting it.
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
i think i mite just buy a new 1 for this build...
i have a spare 140mm fan out my antec case.. mite steal that and try and fix it at a later date.
what should i get possibly?
Re: HELP! OCZ Modular 500w annoying rattling noise but when i tilt over 30° stops
