Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
Why oh why are they still so blooming pricey?
A quick check at today's prices (using Scan, who's prices I am not finding particular fault with) shows that their cheapest 2TB drive, a Samsung F4EG is under £65.
The cheapest internal 3TB drive is a Hitachi at £165. (Interestingly there is also a 3TB ext. WD for £160, but i'm not clear if this is 2 x 1.5, or what the deal is).
So 50% extra capacity for 150% extra cost... come on!!
I understand that a certain premium is placed on top end of any given range but stilll :censored:
My Synology NAS is now nearly full, having used my 4 x 2TB drives (only giving 5.5TB after formatting and RAID), and would love to upgrade, however it's simply not worth the cost.
Grrrr.

I'm sure you don't actually need an answer to that, but I can't help myself .... because they're new, and cutting edge. Give it a few weeks and they'll drop, and give it a few months more (well, maybe a tad longer than that) and you'll find Kelloggs wouldn't even put 'em in a cornflakes packet as a freebie, as we'll all be on 300TB SSDs by then.

As long as he's buying I don't mind. ;)

Buy my 209j and fill it with cheap 2Tb drives? :D
Re: Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
New stuff in expensive SHOCKER.
Re: Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
2TB drives were expensive when they came out, but they dropped soon enough. Give them six months or so.
Re: Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
The only drives to come out that weren't massively more expensive on release were the first Seagate 1.5TB drives, and that's because they turned out to be shockingly bad.

I certainly will guarantee that, but I do also totally and utterly reserve for myself, not subject to amendment, modification suggestion or inference by others, the right to define which Christmas.

Re: Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
You need more than 5.5TB of storage and are a bit annoyed it's expensive?
I'd hate to see you get annoyed at something actually worth getting annoyed at ;)
Re: Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
Meh, I seem to recall spending a small fortune on 1.5Tb disks to fill my N5200PRO when I bought it from Funkstar a couple of years back - £165 is a figure that sticks in my mind from then.It did make me choke a little at the time, but I appreciated that these was going to give me a significant amount of redundant storage for my VMWare lab. 2 years or so down the line and I've just checked to see that I have a little over 2Tb remaining of the 5Tb that I get from them. There's probably a couple of redundant snapshots I can get shot of, and certainly some VMs that I *could* decommision. I could revise my backup strategy (or the onsite part, anyways) if I started to run low on space, but...
seriously dude - what the hell are you filling it with?

Would you believe photos of my mum and a couple of poems written in Word ??
Re: Rant - 3TB drives are too expensive!
Mate, I feel your pain. My 4TB WHS box has less than 500GB space left. I'm planning a massive upgrade soon. And I'm looking at the 3TB disks.

But seriously - with today's broadband speeds you can stream your porn in relatively high quality so you don't need to keep it on premises.
