Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Just bought a new laptop Studio 1558, but its just to bright and hurts my eyes!. By pressing F4 I am able to turn the brightness down, but even on its lowest setting its still to bright for me.
I have tried all my laptop options and just cant find any brightness setting to lower it even further.
Any ideas on what I can do ?
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Presuming you are using Windows 7, try right click > Personalise > Screen Saver > Power Options > Change Power Settings, and then there should be a scroll bar along the bottom of the window for brightness.
Hope this helps!

I noticed it had that bar on my old laptop, but on this laptop it doesnt display that slide bar for the brightness in the power optios for some reason
Any other ideas ? Here is a picture showing that it doesnt daply that slider bar, even clicking the advanced power options doesnt even display it. Is there some 3rd party software maybe, or a dell update ?

Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
As before, but click on Change Plan Settings and then there is another smaller bar, one for each battery and mains.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
From the picture, click on advanced power settings, then find Display, expand it, and then expand Display Brightness and should let you enter a percentage.
EDIT: go into the BIOS and check that it hasn't been disabled from there, and the light sensitative dynamic changing thingy can be disabled from there so that may be worth a check. I am grasping at straws now.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
I expand display and it only lists 2 options
On Battery : 2 minutes
Plugged in : 5 minutes
Had a look in my bios, couldnt really see anything hinting of brightness
Cant be right tho that you have to use this laptop this bright, its killing my eyes just spending time on here trying to find a fix

Sorry, not sure what to suggest in that case. The screenshot was taken from my Latitude E6400 which has a vanilla (i.e. not Dell) Windows 7 install, so I would suggest it was something to do with the way Dell has it configured.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
What a nightmare, wonder if a bios update might add it.
Bit of a mad one this !!
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
you could try uninstalling all the dell bloatware (except for the touchpad one). I did that on my work laptop, unfortunately i dnt have it with me atm so i cant check myself

Wouldn't have thought so - that was just on the off chance. It is allmost certainly a software thing. Try buscuit's suggestion.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Well I updated the bios and managed to get the slider bar up.... Only problem is it doesnt dim it anymore than it did when I had to press F4
Think as its a 1080p screen its just meant to be quite bright. Just thought you might of been able to make it darker.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Guys do you know of some type of glass or anti glae screen that I can fit over the top of my laptop, to use when I am surfing the web up close, so it doesnt strain my eyes ?
My screen is 15.6" I think :)
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Not sure which company provides the graphics solution on your Dell; if it's Nvidia you can also adjust the brightness through the Nvidia Control Panel.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Can I ask how often you get eye strain when viewing the screen?
And is it instant or does it happen over a longer period of time?
If you find that looking at the screen in general makes you eyes strain then you may want to consider anti reflective coated spectacle lenses.
If you find that you get eye strain after a while then I would suggest you see an opticain and have an eye test, to determine whether you need glasses for the VDU.
I'm a student optician btw, I'm no expert but its just my 2 pence :).

Press and hold the Fn key and press the down arrow.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
It's not the down key. You have to hold the Fn key and press F4 (or F5 for brighter).
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Ok, its the arrow key on the latitudes and on my xps.
Re: Help my Laptop is to bright Dell Studio 1558
Actually, now I think of it, it's the down key on my XPS at work too. I thought it was random across different manufacturers, but apparently it's random across different models too!
