    Question Cooling this... (drive cage)

This is a 3 bay 3.5 inch drive cage. It will (eventually) have 3 SATA Barracuda's in RAID5, and they'll probably get a tad warm. So, any ideas on how to cool it - or do you think I should get another drive cage and mod it in there?

I can't stick an 80mm on the front, due to the LCD mod that'll be there, so really I guess it's gotta go on the back.

Perhaps I could mod a Zalman fan & bracket? I don't know I've never used one.

    Cheers,
    Kez.

Stick them in the 5.25" bays instead (with converters and or bays with fans in them)... Expensive but probably the best way...

Or get a cheap antec / chieftec case from ebuyer that has fans in front of the 3.5" bays?

I should have said - all three 5.25" bays are in use by other stuff (or will be by the time the 'cudas get put in.) Furthermore this case is one I've had for a long time, and has been the subject of resprays/mods - I'm not replacing it

Thinking a bit more now - I might actually get an 80mm fan in front of them, but I won't know until I get the LCD mod done.

I remember seeing a review for some 'drive bay extenders' from Lian li a while back - two plates that you screw into the existing 3.5" bay and get another 3 spaces in return (so that there's at least more space between them). No idea where to get them though.

you can get the lian li drive bay extension from maplins for under a tenner... they are actually nice bits of kit i usually use for setting up raid arrays in tower cases.

    much easier to cool too

Sounds like a similar problem to mine Kez. I have 3 WD Caviars in a 3 space cage and it gets more than a tad warm. Neither can i fit a fan in front easily becaouse of the nature of my case mods.
I was thinking of possibly water cooling. If you got the cage out and soldered lots of 1/4 inch/6mm copper tubing to each side. You could have the tubing bent into a multiple S shape and this should provide enough contact area especially if you coated the side cheeks of the drives with TIM where thay came in contact with the cage.

    It's an idea anyway

I was after a bigger dive cage myself so I could join the RAID/striping club. I was just going to order a cheap case from ebuyer that had 5 or 6 bays in a cage and mod it.

Luckily I managed to score the last Lian Li kit(3 bay) from my local maplins as they had it in the clearance section. They seemed to have loads of the 2 bay kits left though.

As to the cooling issue the Lian Li kit has PLENTY of holes in each side. So kez you could probably just afix a fan to the outside of the cage to blow across the width of the drives without a bracket at all.

Anyway cheers to malfunction and SmileyUK for the heads up on this. Way easier than the modding option

Oh and the Maplins codes are:
    2 bay ZT96E for £7.99
    3 bay ZT97F for £9.99
