Is there much of a performance diff between a 2200xp and 2400xp
No
But I'm guessing it doesn't overclock as well?

1st question, is the 2400xp a thoroughbred or a Barton?
If they're both Thoroughbreds they'll overclock to about the same speed.
May as well buy a thoroughbred mobile (on the Bargain Hunt forum)
That will be an uberclocker

IS there much of a perfromance difference between a 2400xp thoroughbred or a Barton then?
Do remember that there are two types of thoroughbred. A and B.Originally Posted by GreenPiggy
If it's a Thoroughbred B then it _should_ overclock well. The thoroughbred B core is exactly the same ranging from the 2100+ to the 2700+ which means you can happily get it up to 3200+ speeds if it were a thoroghbred B with a good stepping.
Also, GreenPiggy, he's only stated the CPU here so you can't go into overclocking unless you know his hardware can support it.
The Bartons have a larger cache (512 as opposed to 256KB)
This will give a good performance increase in some areas but not in others.
Things like games will benefit the most but number crunching apps will be better with the thoroughbred (because of the higher clockspeed)
Thoroughbred 2400+(2.0Gig)
Barton 2400+(1.75Gig?)

I didn't think there were any notifiable differences in performance between the different core types.
Yes the Barton has more Cache but in the case of AMD it doesn't benefit it to a noticeable degree.
You can get 2200xp's a good bit cheaper than a 2400xp, or even a mobile one. So when you as cash strapped as I am I was wondering would there be much of a difference. Not overclocked these would be the same as a P4, 2.4b yeah?
Overall there's not much of a difference between the two, just variations in the different benchmarks (gaming etc) The Barton will always outperform the thoroughbred in that one. I definitely notice my games run quicker with a Barton@2.2 than a Thoroughbred@2.3
Whats the rest of the setup anyway?

If you're really strapped for cash get one of these

It's a thoroughbred 'B' so should be good for 2.3-2.4gig
Really need to know what Motherboard, RAM etc you have first though

To do a major overclock you need good ram and a good board, both are not cheap. So I'm going to get a basic board and some some inexpensive ram. I'm hoping to build a quiet nippy test machine/server. I'm not really going to overclock it.
as long as you have a board you can change the multiplier on and some 3200 RAM then that mobile would be a good choice. Try one of the cheapy nForceII boards(There was a well cheap one in the bargain hunt forum a while ago)
