    Angry Short lived happiness.

So woke up today morning gf still in bed so was gonna use my new rig with headphones.

Plugged in - no sound. Unplugged monitor sound stopped working.
When I'm in windows the sound indicator (when i press volume control) still shows sound is coming out.
This is driving me mental - looked online couldn't find anything either.
What the hell is this ?

Have you got sound without the headphones?

And where are you plugging the headphone into?

    Re: Short lived happiness.

If you are plugging into the front of the case, you will need to have to audio connected to the front panel, sometime it also requires a jumper moving.

First things first, trouble shoot if you have audio from the rear i/o, if all you have is monitor/headphones, make sure the audio is not off/mute

    Re: Short lived happiness.

Win 7 would give you basic sound if that is what you are using, have you installed the drivers for the board?

    Re: Short lived happiness.

First thing to try is the headphones directly into the green audio port on the back of the motherboard (it sounds like you've already tried this?). If that isn't working then something on the motherboard is stopping the sound getting to the ports.

Have you had audio from the rig before? If so, have you changed anything or installed any updates since then that might have caused a problem? I once got called out 150miles to support an audio problem that ended up being because Windows Update had installed an "updated" driver that didn't work properly!

Otherwise, my first stop would be the front audio header (as it sounds like you've conected up the case front audio ports). This normally has two jumpers on it to short the left & right audio back to the motherboard. If you've connected the front audio in such a way that those two connections don't short when there's no plug in the front audio, then it could stop the rear ports outputting too. Try disconnecting the front audio, replacing the jumpers (your mobo manual should be able to show you the correct pins to short), and trying again.

    Re: Short lived happiness.

Another thing to check would be that whatever the sound is plugged into on the motherboard, be it AC97 or HD Audio, matches what has been selected as the sound output in the BIOS.

    Re: Short lived happiness.

    hey guys
thanks for all the advice - ended up being something different
It's kinda fixed now but I'm not sure if headphones will work again - left them in my housemates room
After going through near enough everything there is, i started deleting audio related soft to see if that worked - ended up being srs advanced monitor sound crap, which was supposed to boost sound quality - however as soon as headphones went in that piece of poo obviously went crazy :S
gonna try with headphones later and with that uninstalled see how it goes

There may be a BIOS option to say whether the FP is AC97 or HD audio, and ISTR the Antec 300 has two plugs on the end of the front audio panel cable to also give both options. Might have something not consistent there.

As for the back story, I read that as you having a "morning gf" which implies also having an "evening gf" and wondering at the complications that could cause OK, it's a boring day at the office and I am easy to amuse...

    Re: Short lived happiness.

well i took particular care when attaching those front wires to the mobo - i'll double check again when i can be bothered since atm it's less effort just plugging in the back and unplugging monitor sound

nah unfortunately those days are gone now
