It's really funny watercooled because i just read the whole thread and all the responses and was thinking: "did jounkarry just read the title of the thread and post an answer lol?" would seem that way.
On a side note I know that if the graphics card isn't getting enough power from the psu then you get a very horrible whiney sound. But it is probably this coil whine that pob et al are suggesting as it is a really horrible noise if the gfx card isn't getting enough power. Good luck fixing it.
If the PSU was getting overloaded, it should shut down, even though most even high-end ones don't. You can't really get 'not enough power', what happens when you overload a SMPS, usually, is the voltage will keep dropping and the ripple will increase until something goes pop. Maybe it's the increase in ripple you're referring to - this might be a cause of coil whine as it would place more stress on the GPU's own power circuit. You also get buzzing coils when you run a PC from a UPS with a poor non-sine-wave output.
Sorry I wasn't very clear at all what I meant is if your graphics card requires two 8 pin connectors or two 6 pin connectors and you only plug one in. Then the graphics card doesn't get enough power from the psu and it makes a bad noise.
Hey. I can confirm it wasn't the processor at least, tried a new 1 and still did it.
And it's not the noise level if you don't have enough power to GPU(that screams!). it's barely audible to be honest!
Thanks for all the replies.
It would seem very unlikely that a CPU would make any detectable sound.
It's much more likely that the sound is being reflected and so it sounds like it's coming from the cpu area.
The only real way to identify the cause is to swap out components (ideally remove them).
Just don't run the cpu without its cooling !! If you do the magic blue smoke will escape and it will never be the same again :surprised: :wallbash:
It was fault in seemingly all 1155 boards to update.
