Computer running slow/freezing up
My pc has been happily chugging away for a while now, but in the last week or two it crashes when on firefox and other undemanding programs, and then it completely refuses to go to task manager, and then when I restart the pc it says there is an unexpected I/O error and I have to leave the pc off for a while for it to recover and let me boot into windows. Any ideas at all? Really don't want to reinstall windows. The computer has no problem at all with 100% CPU and GPU load with folding/gaming/whatever, but browsing is a nogo. And it's not just firefox, before you ask.
Thanks for any help.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Err, first guesses would be drivers and/or malware.
Check for chipset/NIC/SATA Controller/etc drivers and run malwarebytes, preferably from another computer with this as a second HDD.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
In terms of drivers for the sata drives, I'm using Windows' own AHCI drivers, so can't see that being the problem. Running some virus scans now.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Malwarebytes turned up nothing.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Does your motherboard have any extra SATA/IDE controllers on board? My previous board had a JMicron controller and it would cause the system to lock up when I opened Computer. I didn't bother updating the drivers, I just disabled it in BIOS because I didn't need it but that sorted the problem.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Not sure but again, seems unlikely that after 8 months that has only just now become a problem. It takes about half an hour from me switching on the computer til it freezes, or it seems like that. Audio continues, but nothing moves any more and I can't go into task manager for ages.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Something might be overheating - this is backed up by you saying it goes OK after the PC being off for a while. Check CPU/chipset temps and check the heatsinks are seated properly. Also check RAM but I think if this was at fault you'd be betting BSODs.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Overheating occured, I'll check temps next time, it'll be chipset/mosfets if anything, can't see it being CPU.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Does the problem still persist at stock CPU frequency?
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Yep, have checked that, at stock settings with three cores it's still misbehaving.
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
See i was going to suggest sticking a few more volts through the SB, but given its still messing you around at stock frequency/settings I'm stumped for ideas :(
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Could it just be windows being bad?
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
I have no idea, maybe try and upload the error dumps? Someone round 'ere is bound to know what they mean. :p
Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
There would still have to be a reason, unless Windows gets PMT?

Re: Computer running slow/freezing up
Right, currently at 100% cpu load, and the sb heatsink is hot, but not alarmingly so, the mosfets (which are exposed) are cool to the touch, and the cpu isn't very hot at all I don't think. Ram is cool to the touch as well.
