Question Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

    What would anyone do?

With 3 30" screens and one huge ass screen res, I'm wondering if the 5970 or Quadfire 5970's are the right way to go...
Now with the resolution hitting 8064 x 1600 any card I use has to have some guts to power it and power it fast. Here's a screen shot of 8064 x 1600

When gaming I'm using a single card mostly with the stock 2560 x 1600 res of a 30" screen, most games so far from what I've played run fine over the 60FPS limit that most seem to say is the rock bottom of where you want to be for gaming I do also only run them at stock settings so I dont run the cards overclocked.

I was running Dirt 2 and L4D2 in a 8064 x 1600 res and it was a little sketchy in places. With Dirt 2, I had to lower the settings to Medium as once I tried High it would crawl along at 5fps if I was lucky!! On medium settings I was hitting a constant 50fps. With L4D2 it did require a little overclock on the GPU to run smoothly at the same res but again, everything turned up.

So basically, what would you guys suggest when it comes to changing the cards? I hear they are releasing a 6990 with 2Gb per core and they are also releasing a 3Gb 580GTX... Who would I have to beg to see if someone might lend me some for testing??

    Anyones thoughts??

Re: Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

Sorry boss I forgot to say!!
    Right as follows:

    EVGA X58 759/762
i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz (will be trying for higher when I have water loops sorted) - Got to buy a second CPU for the 762
6Gb DDR3 G Skill Trident and another 6Gb of G Skill Patriot ram
2 x 5970's (one mostly but there's one laying on the desk next to me)
    Loads of hard drives
Adaptec 5405 and 5805 for the drives (2 SAS in one rig, 8 SAS in another)
    Optical drive
2 Quad rads for cooling (separate loops, one for CPU and one for GPU, but getting a third for the motherboard, wont be a quad just a dual rad)
PC Power and Cooling 1200W PSU to power it all

I think that covers it all... Oh Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit oh and the 3 3008 Dell screens

Have you tried running BOTH the HD5970 cards in Crossfire yet??
A pair of HD6970 2GB cards are quite competitive with a pair of GTX580 1.5GB cards at 5760X1200:

Re: Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

I have tried the two 5970's together but with tthe slightly older Cat drivers, performance was worse than with a single card, which I never understood!!

I have thought about trying the 580's as from what reviews I have seen they are faster than the newer ATI cards and they do apear to work better together as well. I just dont know how much better they would be with the 3 screen setup.. I would like to find out!

Re: Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

The HD6000 series has much better Crossfire scaling than the HD5000 series BTW.

In many games a pair of HD6870 1GB cards is competitive with a pair of more expensive GTX560TI 1GB cards even in surround gaming:

Re: Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

Well I'm looking to to run at least that res but higher if not the native res which is 8064 x 1600... I'm looking at the 6990 cards or the GTX 580 3Gb versions as they should be ok with the higher details and the bigger res due to the massive amounts of video ram...

I havent seen any reviews with the 580's on multiple setups so I'm trying to find out where and what they are like at the moment

Re: Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

Does anyone know anywhere where I might be able to test some cards out or who might have a setup that has 2 or 3 580's and 3 30" screens that could tell me how fast or slow games run??

hello i'm in the same boat, no nvida cards can do Eyeinfinity right?

i ve heard that quad fire is not that great, i'm waiting for the 6990 and i may go tri fire with one and a 6950 and unlock it and oc them both.

the 5970 is a good card but crysis 2 with Eyeinfinity is going to need some thing special.

i can get good results in crysis with the 5970 1920*1600 x3

Re: Eyeinfinity help and GPU recommendations...

I can run a few games at 8064 x 1600 over the 3 30" screens but its the lack of video ram that is causing me issues not the speed so much of the card.

The Crossfire support isnt great, but some games for example, Dirt 2 ran with a 90%+ scale, but when it comes to something like Mafia 2 or Alien vs Prediator, it just doesnt cut the mustard....
