    Re: Need a new PSU.

To start with you don't need a 750w psu for what you have.

FPS is a decent manufacture, not always the best and that unit was a budget unit based on their old epsilon design, it was a solid functional design but they had a lot of issues with capacitor quality.

To start with I'd test the psu as that may not be at fault at all, Boot the pc go into BIOS and check the voltage and temperature numbers, also see if it shuts down if it's just sitting in BIOS.

Do you have a spare psu you can try?

The XFX 650w psu would be a good one for you http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...-12v-135mm-fan
    They are made by seasonic

EDIT: the antec one for £60 that Domestic_Ginger linked would also be good as would the corsair TX650w

and Jonny you are correct in your thinking the efficiency is how much of the AC input wattage can be converted into DC output by the psu, a good 650w psu should be able to supply 650w to the pc.

    Re: Need a new PSU.

Looks like it's going to be a toss-up between the Antec True Power 650w Modular for £60 or the Corsair TX-650w for £63.

I know I don't need 750w, I misunderstood the "efficency" stuff. I disconnected everything from the psu and tried it that way, still cut out. I also hooked up the PSU to this little device I got free with it to check the rails, and even then it still cut out.

    Re: Need a new PSU.

ok does sound like you got a bad psu
Probably one of the capacitors has blown.

I'd go with the Antec. ps it's semi-modular, ie there's quite a few cables still hard wired in,
    24pin cable, a 4pin ATX cable, a separate 8pin EPS cable, a 6pin and a 6+2pin pci-e on one cable, a cable with 3x sata and a cable with 3 molex and a floppy.
    http://www.kitguru.net/components/po...650w-review/2/
This covers the basics most people will need, with additional cables being modular.

Better than a non-modular psu but not quite as good as a full modular psu for reducing the amount of cables to deal with.

I'll take the advice on the Antec. Also, could you recommend a good chipset fan whilst I'm ordering?

    Re: Need a new PSU.

    Tricky, older motherboard.
this is the only chipset heatsink scan has http://www.scan.co.uk/products/north...ntel-amd-mobos
Larger surface area will help with heat dissipation

for a chipset fan the Akasa 40x20mm fans are decent http://www.scan.co.uk/products/40mm-...set-cooler-fan better than the 40x10mm, about the same low noise but move more air.

edit: however both are taller than the current one so would get in the way of a graphics card in the lower pci-e slot.

edit2: if you don't mind modding what you could do is trying to adapt one of these to fit http://www.scan.co.uk/products/akasa...tel-socket-370

    Those two together = win?

The fan that was supplied with the mobo is real loud now. I've tried greasing it before but it didn't last too long.

The one on there at the moment has a slim heatsink and a fan that sits inside it's casting. Could I just replace the fan with the Akasa one? because the GFX card takes up two slots, it sits just above it, so I don't know if that heatsink will fit, as you said.

    Re: Need a new PSU.

If the fan is a standard 40x10mm chipset fan then this one will work http://www.scan.co.uk/products/akasa...-with-blue-led only 10mm but should be the same size.

    Re: Need a new PSU.

That antec one got very good reviews everywhere particularly for it's stability and reliability (don't know how you can test the "reliability" in a short space of time but there you go). The only thing that let it down and cost it "points" or whatever in reviews is the fact that it is advertised as modular and isn't! Anything more than 20pin plus 4pin isn't modular for me (still obviously better than having all the cables hard wired).

It was also close to 100 quid i think when first released and now it seems to hoover constantly around the 65 quid mark which is very good value.

You could try the antec spot cooler if you want a little fan that can be stuck anywhere.
