Dell Studio 17 - audio over HDMI
I have a dell studio 17 laptop, and like to connect it to my surround sound/TV/Receiver via an HDMi capable. The only issue is 80% of the time the audio never gets put through. The video works fine, but the laptop will not pass the audio onto the receiver.
it works fine on my lodgers laptop, everytime the audio gets transferred to the receiver...but mine only works sporadically at best. As a result I get stuck using the laptop speakers, whilst my surround sound sits there ideally.
Microsoft were meant to sort this with their Sp1...but desbite having it it has made no difference. I have tried re-installing the drivers & everything I can think of but the bloody thing never works reliabily.
So...how is it that a computer which is made up of 1s and 0s (yes & nos) can works sometimes, and then not work other times...with no changes in between. Surely it should either always work...or never work!
Stupid damn thing
(its an ATi HD 5650 for the record, on Windows 7)

I presume you've changed the playback device to the HDMI option in the sound menu?
Re: Dell Studio 17 - audio over HDMI
Yep, when it does work it does ti automatically. I plug in HDMI & switch the receiver over to the right HDMi input and the screen extends itself & it SHOULD just swap the sound over automatically, but usually it doesn't. I have tried various combination of plugging it in & switching it over etc.
My flat mates laptop works flawlessly everytime. :(

Re: Dell Studio 17 - audio over HDMI
Have you tried a different HDMI cable ? Might be worth ruling that out. I know it works on another laptop but still worth a go.
Re: Dell Studio 17 - audio over HDMI
Just an update, it all comes from the laptop going into standby/sleep mode. If the computer has been to sleep then the audio will not work. The laptop needs to be restarted for it to work again.
