Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
Yes I know they're old as feck, but I can't afford a new laptop!
Trying to upgrade this Acer Aspire 1680, 855GME chipset, but I have heard that the C0 stepping CPUs (735A, 745A etc) won't run properly on it.
Anyone have any experience/opinion on this matter? Or know what the difference is between the steppings is either?
Cheers m'dears
Michael

No one?
I am flogging a dead horse with this laptop and I KNOW it. I should bin it and buy something built in the last 5 years :)
Re: Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
it is most likely the bios that is stopping you more than any real difference. i would look for a bios update that would allow you to put in the new chip other than that your sol.
Re: Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
Whats the current CPU?
Think I've got a Pentium M somewhere, think it's the 1.86Ghz 750 (C1)
Re: Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
I've got the latest Acer BIOS, and I can't find a hacked one anywhere. The board won't run CPUs at >100fsb, or mem (DDR1, lol) at >166, and I've heard talk that it doesn't like the C0 stepping CPUs much either. :|
Re: Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
Ace, it works. Seems a bit faster, I think the main change is that it runs at full speed all the time when in any sort of use and plugged in, rather than throttling pointlessly when it's only 50C anyway.
A marginal improvement for £5 :)
Re: Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
And for archive purposes, you did what to fix it? :)
Re: Pentium M B1 vs C0 stepping...
Bog all, it still won't have 133fsb CPUs, it's just that the C0 stepping made the throttling better I think :)
