P67 vs H67

Can someone clear this up for me please. As I understand the new Intel CPU's have integrated GPU's so that they use that for normal usage instead of a dedicated graphics card as it's more energy efficient.

Is the only difference between a P67 and H67 board is that the H67 has the ability to use the integrated graphics without a dedicated graphics card also installed? Is this right and is this the only difference between the 2 chipsets?

Depends on your needs, the P67 is the overclockers board so allows overclocking of the CPUs the H67 doesn't. Also the H67 allows access of the inbuilt GPU on the CPU the P67 doesn't. If you don't plan on overclocking buy the H67.

No, it doesn't. The integrated GPU is completely disabled.

Ahh right I thought that was the whole point of the integrated GPU was to use that under light usage and then seamlessly change to a dedicated GPU when needed.

P67 cannot use integrated graphics at all, it goes to waste. Also cannot use QuickSync (the encoding stuff) as that depnds on the integrated graphics being connected IIRC.

H67 can use both of those, but cannot usually overclock, although some higher end boards might enable it (multiplier adjustment on K processors only with SB remember) and is mostly on uATX or small boards.

H61 is a cut down H67.

Z68 is the real enthusiast chipset, due in a month or 2.

Yes, in laptops... Like Nvidia Optimus. This hasn't been enabled on desktops, shame.

The H67 has the onchip graphics connected, however it's only active when there is no graphics card plugged in, the moment you plug a graphics card in the on chip graphics is shutdown, so you cannot use both at any time.

The Z68 is due in summer and is basically the H67 but with overclocking unlocked.

the thing you are getting mixed up with, the ability to run on the onboard graphics and have a card take over under load is something from ati and nvidia, nothing to do with intel chipsets.
It was called hybrid crossfire/hybrid sli and has been pretty much quietly dropped by both companies, the main reason being that current graphics cards are running at far lower idle power levels to the point that the saving is tiny now.
It has turned up in a few laptops but that's all.
