Hi Guys,
I just built one of these systems last night with a XP 3000 processor, 512 Mb RAM, 80Gb HD...can someone tell me what the bios settings should be for the system??
At present the processor is showing as XP1700 on boot up!?

FSB is too low...you need 166 or 200 accroding to which chip you have, the mobo might need the jumper swapping....look in the book for the one that allows the higher bus speeds.......plus that motherboard unlocks the chips multiplier...so you might need to play with that too.
You have a Barton, right?

512MB 333MHz DDR RAM
Ok...no screenies sadly..at work..but here goes....
Some Barton 3000 XP chips are 333 bus speeds (thats 166 Double Data Ram..so 166x2=333) and some are 400 bus speeds...(thats 200 DDR...200x2=400)
The memory that you have there is PC2700 ...thats 333....so lets hope your XP3000+ cpu is a 333 chip....
The Motherboards run out of multipliers at 12.5 ...and after that the chips had to change a small contact on them to allow multipliers of 13 and above.
I know that a Barton 2800+ is a 12.5 x166(ie 333 mem) cos I have one...it wont go higher on the multiplier....
So....I THINK that a 3000+ is either 13 or 13.5 multiplier....
you need to find that option in your BIOS...
however....if its a 400 fsb (200x2) is will be a lower multiplier and it will be expecting a higher bus speed to allow the processor to run at the rated speed.
Last but not least....dont forget that XP chips dont run at the speed shown..thats their rating....not the actual clock speed...
so an XP 2600+ chip runs at 2083 mghz....
Trouble is I dont know what speeds your XP3000+ is supposed to be at....

In the Bios settings there is an option for Agressive, Expert, Optional and different modes...
ok....leave voltage as DEFAULT as you will be running an XP3000 at its normal speed.
There are CPU interface and Monory timings for stuf like Aggresive ...
dont know how good your memory is, so loath to tell you to set THAT to aggressive...but CPU interface should be OK...as its a standard chip at standard speeds.
If you set this stuff to User Defined you suddenyl get loads of options..if you';re new to this....avoid it!
Get it stable....THEN play with it!
mjgreen1979: I had the same problem, make sure you have changed the jumper in between the AGP and PCI slots from 100/133 to 166/200 (ie 1st/2nd pins to 2nd/3rd pins). Otherwise it will not use the right FSB.
As for the bios I have it on defaults/auto for everything bar fan speed which is set to silent, I then use speedfan in windows which monitors and adjusts my fan speeds.

Does your PC recognise the CPU speed when it first boots up?
Yeah, recheck your manual and you will find more on it, basically it switches between the lower speed FSBs and the higher ones, once I did that it worked out everything on its own.Quote:

Yeah I think some chipsets don't support unbranded well, the EQ3702 uses dual channel ddr dimms. You may want to see if you can turn it down to single channel. thats all that I can think off. I use Crucial memorey that was fine.
Also check the chips on the DDR and if they match any of these http://www.soltek-computer.de/soltek...memorylist.pdf some need memorey precharge switched off in the bios.
can I humbly suggest.....
knock the FSB down to 100 again.....so you HAVE a PC....
then full install of XP...
and THEN re configure the mobo and mem and bios.
ie....see if it works :) Once XP is on, you can THEN sort out if you need better memory.
OR
I'd fit a FLOPPY DRIVE...download MEMTEST on a different PC (small program)....put it on the floppy.....follow instructions that are on memtest web site.
set BIOS on the Soltec to boot from floppy...put Memtest floppy in...boot up.
The floppy will boot into the software and run straight away...menu is at bottom of the LINUX screen that it runs in (and NO you DONT need to understand Linux)
run all tests....see if it IS the memory....it runs the test AT THE BIOS settings..so if it wont run at one, try a lower mem speed.
Might be you have the timings set too tight....in BIOS allow SPD timings..

Would anyone be good enough to tell what exact type of RAM I need to use with this system, not having much luck guys getting this piece of kit up and running.
Compared to the shuttle was up and running in a hour or so...

Me again, goign to order a new 512 Mb DIMM, with my processor XP3000 do I need to get PC2700 or PC3200 DIMMS??
get 3200's just cos they are such sim price and you never know when you might want the extra speeds...
plus you will be able to use them at 2700 speeds with tighter timings if you dont go to 3200 speeds...
if its only a couple of pound difference...get the fastest you can find :)

I agree with Zak, I did exactly the same. I have no intension of overclocking my 2500+, but I might buy a 3000+ mobile in the future it would be a pain to have to buy 1gb of ram twice.
Quick question Gunbuster, as you have this system...
Does it have 2 IDE connections....
I have a Sony DVD-RW to go on it and a normal DVD drive, planning on using the cube as a DVD copier machine.
Would I be best to have the DVD-RW set as Master and DVD Reader set as slave on one controller......or I hear for copying from 1 drive to the other it would be best to say have HD as master, DVD reader as slave on on controller and DVD RW as master on other controller...
Any comments?
Yes it does, but the cable for the HD is routed to the front and is a single head, the DVD/CD bays cable is longer and has two heads. The Hard disk bay is at right angles to the DVD/CD bays, but you could use the floppy bay instead and reroute the cable for the HD. What set up would you recommend best for me then?
The IDE ports, you may need a longer ide cable for the dvdrw (as it will be further away than the normal HD caddy), but the existing 2 head cable should be fine for the HD and DVDrom. I don't really know what to suggest as I don't do a lot of copying.

on the whole I'd use the same DVD drive for BOTH reading and writing...rather than doing it on the fly....ie burn to HDD and then ack to disk.
So you only need one anyway :) Master obviously

Big Problem here. I tried building this machine last night again. I booted up with Win XP CD, created partition, formatted to NTFS. Each stage it gets to the stage of coping the setup files from the CD to the HD, gets to about 3% and says cannot find file, Retry, Skip or about...if I retry same thing, Skip it will copy a few more files and then a get blue screen and have to reboot.
Getting loads of blue screens all over the place??
Anyone any idea whats goign on here?
I had a simlar problem with a Motherboard bundle from Novatech, which I ended up returning as being faulty....
How clean is the CD? Got a fingerprint on it?
I think its something a bit more serious than that, tried a couple of CD versions...
is it a new HDD? or an old one? Does it format OK? Do the LONG FORMAT, not the quick one
Brand new 80Gb HD, formats fine. I had the long NTFS format, its the bit after that goes hay wire...
Am getting new branded memory today which am hoping will fix it. but if not am in trouble as I have had the system for months and not gotten in running.
Did you try installing from the same DVD drive in both systems that were failing to install?
Old system was deffinately fault, as I m8 took the bundle of me and he had the same problems, different components i.e. PSU, HD, CD etc.
I am using a Sony 52x CD-RW on the Soltek to install Windows XP.
right...so the BIOS is all set up standard, the cpu is heatsinks up, the FAN is PLUGGED in....and the BIOS is set to boot up off CD Rom first.
The XP disk goes in, the PC boots, finds the XP disk, and loads ther first stuff...you hit F8 to accept Windows laws and regulations, then you delete the original partition totally leaving you with a blank and un formated HDD>..you choose to istall XP on it, choose NTFS and to use all of it.
Then you choose the format style (once its been done the long way, I think its fair to say the Quick option is acceptable after that)....
and it starts copying system files....and then STOPS at 3%.
Is that right?
How long have you left it at 3% for? Did you just try leaving it for an hour or so....?
Or does it reboot....or blue screen....or what?
Bios set as standard. CPU and heatsink fitted, cooler fan on, boots from CD first.
Exactly as you describe. Falls at copying shell32.dll, somtimes gets passed that or will go past it if you skip file.
You can't leave it for an hour or so, as it just sits on a screen asking to you want to retry or skip the file. If I skip the file then get a blue screen. Have to power off or reboot.

CAN YOU TRY A DIFFERENT CR ROM...even an old one....it is well worth a try . I promise its the best thing to try next.
Well I was unlucky enough to experience this be4 with a dodgy mobo bundle. Not a nice problem to deal with.
Am getting some1 to copy another Win XP CD for me. Would the CD-RW cause install problems? Is it worth installing XP via floppy drive rather than bootable? using FAT32?

My Shuttle is up and running, DVD & DVD Writer, working nice so far. Last night I installed the Crucial Branded 512 Mb PC3200 RAM, LiteOn DVD drive and all now working. So reakon it was the memory that was causing the major headache here.

Its only £110 for an OEM XP PRo disk....all of your own.

Like Zak said £110 for XP pro isn't that much, especially compared to video card.
Also it intitles you to all the updates and service packs. When I don't feal like paying for a product (it isn't that important to me) I generally find a freeware or cheap alternative. I use openoffice.org instead of MS Office, as an office package virgin I found it alot easier to use than MS Office.

I dont hate ya either....just think its vital that everybody, whether they hate Mr Gates for being so powerfull and rich or not, pays for what they use.
