Question Why do the likes of HP do this?

Just received a HDD replaacement for a friend maxtor drive on a warranty covered HP machine, it was a maxtor 20GB hdd. So I have a 40GB ATA133 replacement drive here that is really funkily thin, but theres not 40gb of space, no cos hp have covered the 40GB sticker and in the top left hand corner its got a new LBA label and a 20GB, and guess what, its a 20GB drive, I ask you, whats the point throttling the space?

It's to cover their arses - if you were to eat into the extra space with your 'standard build' and it failed and was replaced again with a genuine 20Gb leaving you short on space...

This way, you can't use the extra space so if it does fail again there's no comeback on them. Remember that HP/Compaq's main source of income are the large corporates.

How did they manage to throttle the space? Is it just partitioned to 20gb?

It is probably a remanufactured 40gb, if they can win back a working 20gb from a 40gb that was sent back to them and reuse it then surely that is in their interests to use that to replace your failed 20gb.

oh don;t get me wrong, I am more than happy with this, well the company is, but I was just curious....Im not being greedy, but I see the issues you raised, specifically the failings further down the line thing, very obvious now you mention it....
