Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
I would be looking at the HD6950 too.
BTW,what is the specification of your current PC??
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
I've always preferred the Nvidia cards over the ATI cards, it's just a personal preference. But will take a look.
Current PC is a Core2Duo, 2.4 with 4GB ram. I bought it within a week of the Vista release.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
Is there any reason why you're going for the matx board over the atx version? Seeing as that case will take the atx board no problem, I'm wondering why you'd go for the lower spec mobo.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
No reason, I know little about motherboards and used what little knowledge I do have.
Went for an Asus (decent make from reviews), wanted the sata3 for the SSD and main drive as well.
So better to go with the (Asus P8P67 Pro Rev3 Intel P67 Express) (LN38031) instead then?
I'm also considering spending the £40 and going for the 2GB gfx card as well.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
ok you probably can pull bits out of your current pc and reuse them, which is one reason cat asked you for full specs.
Unless you have some very specific software requirements then going for 8gb of ram over 4gb is fairly pointless.
Don't need anywhere near that level of psu, if you want the option to go sli later then a good 600w is what you want.
if you want the 80+ gold then http://www.scan.co.uk/products/600w-...s12v-135mm-fan
the nzxt hale 650w is also worth looking at http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...-12v-140mm-fan
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
That Barracude XT looks quite nice but a bit pricy for a mechanical drive; am I missing something?
Cheaper PSU as Pob said although I'm not convinced about not going for the 8gb. Admittedly I have 4gb which I never use all of but its so cheap atm......
Unless you specifically want that 560 you can get some starting at £191 iirc saving some cash.
Coolermaster 212+ is good value imo. How about a floppy disc drive; always useful.
Okay maybe not.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
The idea of the drive was that it is a high speed SATA3 drive for installing programs other than the OS on, also has a 5 year warranty which is a nice bonus.
The memory suggestion came from TomsHardware http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...rade,2778.html

Conclusion and Recommendation
Based on our measurements and impressions (and taking falling prices into account), we thoroughly recommend a minimum RAM size of 8 GB. Using 12 or 16 GB only makes sense if you're planning on using 4 GB of more of this higher amount as a RAM disk, helping accelerate the reading and writing of temporary files. This applies equally to file compression, video encoding, and heavy image editing.
Other than this, you might want more RAM so the graphics card can allocate more system memory for its own use. We saw this pay dividends in GTA IV, for example. You won't see an overwhelming performance increase unless you're using very memory-hungry programs, but you will get a system with enough RAM for the foreseeable future.
Given our observations and low prices on memory upgrades, this is the time to hunt down a high-capacity memory kit for your system. In the end, it’s never wrong to make a step knowing that it will improve performance and provide some reserves.
I currently run 2x 1920x1600 monitors and often have a lot of windows open at once. I even used to run 3x Eve Online clients at once sometimes but that did cause some serious chopping when things got busy.
I would also like to keep the existing PC as a working PC rather than end up with a bunch of bits that are no use. I can always find a use for a working PC.

Yes, definitely :)

OK Thanks.
PS where is the thx button on this forum, all I can see is the 'report post' or 'send pm'?
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
You need more posts before you can give thanks (25 I think)
Ooo I missed the Seagate Barracude XT, I'd be warrey of that one, does it use the same hybrid thing that the Momentus XT does?
Because there's still massive issues with that.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
Ah OK, looks like a lot more research to be done on the hard drive then tonight.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
I see you're going for an unlocked CPU -are you getting a decent cooler to enable the overclock or is this just something for the future?
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
The idea was to keep my options open to overclock later if needed.
Going to look for a decent cooler as well, always adds to the fun if you have to take the CPU bracket off the motherboard and replace it with an aftermarket one to support the weight of the new cooler.
Might as well do this at the first build rather than pull it all apart later, but I think the last one was a little over the top.

Don't really want to make such a mess of this one.

The insides look a lot tidier now though.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
OK been doing some reading up and now have:
---------------------------------------------------------
i5-2500k, 8GB, Win7prem
part - scan code - price
OS drive - 64GB Crucial ReallSSD - LN34236 - £89.12
main drive - BarracudaXT 2TB - LN28969 - £119.75
GFX - Nvidia GTX 560Ti 2GB (Gainwood Phantom) - LN37972 - £249.98
CPU - Intel i5-2500K unlocked (1155) SandyBridge - LN37506 - £162.18 (OEM out of stock, retail in stock with 3 year warranty)
memory - Corsair XMS3 Classic (2x 4GB) 1600mhz - LN35345 - £74.54 (out of stock DOH!)
motherboard - Asus P8P67 Pro rev3 S1155 ATX - LN38021 - £149.60
PSU - Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 600W (modular) - LN34962 - £70.00
Case - Coolermaster CM690 II Advanced Black - LN32061 - £69.56
OS - Win7 OEM HomePrem 64bit - LN29161 - £72.08
Total £1104.05 (incl VAT, excl Deliv) (minus whatever I can save depending on the TodayOnly deals)
---------------------------------------------------------
I haven't found any glaring issues with the BarracudaXT drive from reviews, and most of the 2TB 7200rpm drives seem to be about the same cost or just 'no ETA'.
I picked the cooler from a review on Tomshardware.
So I think I'm almost there, just need to keep an eye on the deals to see if any of the kit appears there.
Re: Proposed New PC (£1000)
One thing to consider is swapping a 2tb hard drive for 2x 1tb drives, you can get a samsung f3 1tb drive for just under £40
and yes it looks like the BarracudaXT isn't one of their hybrid drives . . . just a bit suspicious because the MomentusXT got great reviews when it came out being far faster than normal hard drives, however after a couple of months lots of users noticed they slowed right down back to normal hard drive levels, seems the hybrid flash memory system isn't that good rappidly filling with junk cache data that doesn't get flushed.
Ok I'll admit I'm also probably a bit jaded and have lost trust in seagate.
