New Printer Advice

As my Samsung ML-1210 has to be replaced I am on the lookout for a new printer. The mono laser was good but would have liked the option for colour now and then and now definitely need colour but not photo quality.

Budget around £140 and running costs are important. Wireless printing attractive but if I can print via a wireless network router to the printer's ethernet port from a wireless device isn't all that important. Did look at the Dell 1320CN for around £118 (colour laser) but apart from its size, doesn't support Linux (use Win 7 & Linux).

Any ideas? Ta.

I have the Dell and really happy with it, IJT phone me every once in a while to offer cut price replacement toner. Had a look around and there appears to be several work arounds for Linux, I think the printer is actually made by samsung

Should add, its pretty big, actually a fair bit larger than I was expecting.

Thanks for that info. I am aware of its size which, apart from Linux issues is kind of putting me off.

If I try to print from my Windows 7 netbook wirelessly would I be able to print to this printer connected to my ethernet switch on the wireless router?

Yep thats what I do

have 2 laptops over wifi, and 1 desktop over ethernet that all access the printer.

Unless your router has the WLAN and LAN on isolated subnets (no consumer routers I know of do this) then it should be no problem - the wireless part is just like a hub.

Came across an Epson Stylus SX515W which doesnt look bad for less than £50 and could print from my Android phone too perhaps

Duplex printing would be great but no problem with manual intervention.

As you took the time to answer, and maybe help others, I have now purchased a printer as follows

Epson SX525WD but only thing if I waited another few days would have saved £12

Nice printer and not as noisy as expected. At the minute (until 1st April 2011) if you buy the T1306 colour multipack when buying printer you get the 1 year warranty upgraded to 3 years for free. I understand that Epson are offering half price 3 year warranty for £22 if you don't go this route. There are other printers covered by the free 3 year warranty and may be worth going for the BX525WD that has XL (Stag) ink (better than the L - Apple) ink as it lasts a lot longer; typically approx. 1000 black with XL

thanks for the tip, useful to know as I'm starting to think about getting a moderate A4 printer myself.

Have you tried doing any photo prints out of it? Would be interested to know what you think of the quality

Don't really intend to use it for printing photos but understand the quality is good. For photos the Canon range tend to be very good as they use 6 inks including a grey also and this printer has just CMYK. At the current price of £74 it's a really good deal. Leaves some dough for a Canon even perhaps?

anyone looking for a very good quality photo printer, Amazon have the Canon MG6150 for £107 at the moment - it's £199 on the Canon web shop and has been around the £140 on Amazon since it came out so it's a great price right now.
