    What's the difference...

.. between the Vertex 2 and Vertex 2E?

I bought this SSD for my new rig: 100gb Vertex 2

    However I saw a vertex 2E: 40gb Vertex 2E

What's the difference between the 2 models apart from capacity size - is the vertex 2E a new SSD than the vertex 2?

So you would say that the 2E is better than the 2?

    Other way around.
The Vertex 2 has more spare area. The 2e has less. More spare area means it will last longer.

On the flipside, 2E has more space, so you're getting more GB/£

    Re: What's the difference...

He said the 2E had less "spare area". I said it had more "space".

Let's say we've got a 100GB SSD. Some of that will be partitioned away as spare area, which can never be used by the OS, PC, user, etc. It's used internally to make the drive more efficient, as a consequence of the way SSD drives work. Some great articles on this at Anandtech that I won't try to summarise here - read them if you're interested, it's well worth it.

So we could partition away 20GB as spare area, giving you an 80GB SSD. Or we could partition away 10GB as a spare area, giving you a 90GB SSD.

The one with more spare area should technically perform better/last longer etc, but whether that's actually true in the long run is dependent on a whole range of factors. The one with less spare area will have more room for storage purposes, which is a fact.

    Re: What's the difference...

And to add to the confusion (well done OCZ), there are now 2 versions of the 2E. The older drives were 32nm. The newer ones are 25nm, which have less space and are slower.

Right snootyjim, thanks for the information - that made it soo much clearer for me!
So I take it that the 2E is better :]

I guess vertex 2E will be my purchase ;D
