Memtest....

Hi guys.

I have downloaded memtest a couple of times to try and see if there is a problem with any of my RAM, as i suspect their maybe.

So i download it, and extract it to a floppy disk. Reboot in DOS and the loads from the a: Then it just scrolls through a load of codes (i assumed they were memory locations?) but they just seem to go on for ever.

What is meant to happen when you run memtest?! and i just being a retard about it?

if u mean all you get is a black screen with loadsa scrolling codes no thats not memtest doing as it should thats memtest failing to run

if you have an error on your ram..its tells ya....in a long list of error codes and the address in your ram where it is.

Along the bottom of the screen are a series of options...you can choose the tests you want...but frankly....let it run the 6 default ones..

it is one of the finest bits of programing amazingness ever to grace the world wide web.

Whatever BIOS settings you have chosen, are the ones that Mem test tries with the memory...so if it fails you can change your bios timings and try again...

Well i dont get any sort of menu....just these scrolling codes.

Your floppy drive is broken, methinks. Try it on a different diskette - if you get the same problem, it's the drive.

The screen Zak is refering to is blue and has lots of useful information on it. The one blockers is refering to is black, with 4-digit (If I recall) codes running down the left-hand side off into infinity. As ga_ging said, that's memtest failing to run.

I presume Memtest must load itself into memory before it can run?
In which case wouldnt you need to have more working memory than is neccessary to load the system bios and other rom?

The computer wont boot at all unless it has the working 64K in the right place to load system bios and the bottom 1024K to get the vga etc bios running. But it seems rather strange that in a lot of cases this memory is intact enough to boot the pc and run memtest yet the rest of the memory is borked. Is this just luck or what?

I downloaded an put memtest on the floppy. And managed to run it which was fun.

So i have spent the last 2 hours checking each of my 4 pc2700 sticks individually. An have come to the conclusion they do not run above 183fsb sync'd. Even though i had them at 200fsb, think i may have been putting too much voltage through them and they knackered.

They still run fine at 166 though they are currently at 180 (2.5-3-3-11) and i did test the timings at different settings, but still no luck.

Guess ill have to leave my clocking 180 then maybe have to buy some pc3200...well unless i win the Hexus corsair comp seems unlikely though.
