I5 2500k

Ok I currently have an athlon II x2 250 clocked at 3.6ghz.

I was wondering how much real world difference I would see upgrading to an i5 2500k.

By real world usage I mean average daily stuff like vidoes and email etc. Plus gaming such as CIV 5 and Bad company 2.

My other components are a hd 6850 and 4gb of ram plus a bog standard hard drive.

For a decent mobo and the CPU the upgrade cost would be around £270. So I was just wondering what the bang for buck is compared to my current set up.

not so much, bit of a shame it cant make a couple more hundred mhz, but really if you are thinking more cores = better, then an x6 will only see you about £160, and an x4 like the i5 £120 or so.

but by your examples - no, not nearly £270 worth, maybe if you could do it for £100 then it would be feasible. but right now save your pennies and swap it all out when something big comes along

You can get a Phenom II X 955BE for around the £100 mark although I would not overclock it on your motherboard as it is a 125W TDP CPU.

TBH,unless you really need a quad core I would wait a few months more. AMD are releasing Bulldozer in June or July.

Yeah I was thinking that might be the answer. Im just weighing up my option I just wish Amd would give some concrete info soon.

+1 Even if Sandy Bridge did give you a boost, there something very interesting supposed to come out from both AMD and Intel in the coming quarter. And even if you stick with the i5-2500k watch those prices fall
