Need suggestions for a cooler for my Phenom X6

Running F@H at 3.4Ghz bumps my temps right up on the stock cooler, I've ordered a Coolermaster 212+ from Play.com for £15 but it's awaiting stock, I fancy getting it upto 3.5Ghz but do I wait for it or cancel & order something else (similar price) ?

Suggestions welcome! I'd love a H50, but even 2nd hand I'm not sure I could get one cheap enough, I could probably stretch to £30 for something like that (not a massive budget I know)

    Cheers guys!

    Rob

Remember that unlike the tower and water coolers the AMD stock cooler is actually keeping the VRMs on your motherboard cool. If you get a new motherboard I would seriously think about getting some VRM heatsinks and a fan blowing over them to keep them cool.

I've got some solid copper & some zalman sinks somewhere, also the side intake fan on my case is pretty hefty so would hopefully help with that as it blows directly onto that area

    I do so want a H50 though

Look on Ebay - you might be able to get an H50 or one of the CoolIT integrated water coolers for around £30 to £40.

That's what I'm doing now actually, some H50s are going for not far off new price, madness!

Are the CoolITs good then? Always thought of them as a cheapo brand myself ?

CoolIT are not cheap AFAIK and were in the market before Corsair. In fact the Corsair H60 is made by CoolIT and IIRC the Corsair H50 is made by Asus.

Looks to be about £35? I could probably buy a H50 for that (after adding cost for a decent fan on the TRUE)

You may have a problem with some of the tower coolers as that side panel fan may be in the way.

Scan have the hyper 212+ (get that over the basic one) for £18 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coole...m2-am2plus-am3
You'll need to add something to the order to get free shipping though.

Cancelled my original order, might just opt for stock until I get something like a H50.

Re: Need suggestions for a cooler for my Phenom X6

Well I own a Amd 1055t (95w) and I also have a h50 to cool it, my computer is under my desk so heat gets trapped as it has no where to go and my room is hot anyway, on idle It ranges sometimes its 36 degrees some times its 40 but on load I have never seen it go over 47 usually its on 46. I use the stock corsair fan but i plan to buy gentle typhoons soon for maybe a push pull setup. It quite silent but one thing that does bother me is a noise which i think is from the pump its not loud but its a buzz. I only here it when i stop and listen but still it annoys me I think i might mod it soon and get dual rad.
But if i were in the market for a cooler similar to the h50, I would prob get one of these
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/antec...plus-am3-3plus its not out yet but its made by the people who made the h50 and I think it will be better,
or a coolit eco because of the annoying pump noise.

Re: Need suggestions for a cooler for my Phenom X6

The 212 plus is a superb cooler, I run it on a 125w x6@3.8 full load crunching wcg, I also run a few other x6s on varying coolers, Coolermaster Hyper 212 Quiet/Xigmatek HDT-S1283/Tuniq Tower and the H50-1, the plus is the best of the bunch. As I have said before, the h50 is alright up to a point 1.4v/3.8 in a enclosed case and it will struggle 24/7. I have had it on my best x6 95w 1.40v/4.0ghz and in my askasa eclipse with 1x120 intake, 1x120 pulling side off it really was at its limits, the fan on the h50 had to be on full if the comp room was anyway kind of hot. At 3.5 it should be ok depending on case/volts/fan speed etc.

As I mentioned before, vrms is crucial when running these x6, you must cool them, depending on what volts/speed you settle on either passive/active. I am running 2 of my x6s on 4+1 boards, Asus M4A785D-M PRO/Asus M4A88T-M both sets of vrms are heat sinked and actively cooled. From personal experience, running a x6 95w on a Gigabyte - GA-MA78GM-S2H I found that 3.5ghz was the sweet spot in term of power draw/stress on a lower spec board/vrms

    cheers

Sorry to jump in on this thread but may I ask how you determine CPU temps for Thuban? The stock readings for software like CoreTemp are far too low and about the only advice I could find was to add 10-15C to the shown temp to get the real temps?

I use PCProbe, came with my Asus mobo so I assume it should give correct readings.
