I'm considering upgrading to sandybridge. A friend wants to sell his 2400 i5 for £110 because he wants to upgrade to a 2500k.
Just wondering if you guys thought it was worth it for me. It tempts me because I can sell my old quad core and an asus extreme motherboard for roughly the same price as the sandybridge motherboard and CPU combo. Also in understand the 2400 although multiplier locked will overclocker to around 3.9ghz.
Should I just spend the extra cash and get a 2500k?
Regarding the 3.9GHz - no; it will Turbo Boost to 3.4GHz but not across all four cores as I understand it.
For the price you would be able to get more raw power elsewhere (think X6 1075T), especially if willing to OC, and for only £15 more an OEM 2500K will provide greater than proportional increases in performance.
Basically, get the 2500K unless the extra £15 is a deal breaker.

Yeah this is the point.
The choice isn't between a brand new 2400 and a 2500k. For £15 I know the way to go.
This is £110 for my friend's 2400 i5.
Also when I said overclocking I was talking about the turbo boost.
I'm aware the turbo boost settings are different on the processors but I was also under the impression that some level of overclocking is possible on the 2400 albeit a pretty poor poor level compared to the 2500k.
Has anybody here had any experience overclocking a 2400k. If the base clock will go up to 3.9ghz across the cores from an overclock then I reckon that would do me nicely.
What do you have now?
Personally i couldn't buy a CPU and not overclock it, 2500K for me.
Q9550 quad core. I reckon I can sell it and my motherboard (asus rampage extreme) for the same price it will cost me to upgrade to the sandybridge platform.

You have to remember that mid to high end CPUs can keep their value really well because there will be plenty of people wanting to upgrade without upgrading their motherboards. The sandybridge CPUs blow practically everything out of the water but intel still charge around the same for their older generation CPUs.
