what's wrong with HP?
start with battery life and then go to a store where you can get your hands on one and have a play. Crippled by bloatware, and unless you get an envy model with the metal chassis, I find them a bit too plasticy and flimsy for my liking. Personal taste I guess.
Matlab is all he says he uses really.

This is the one which has been put forward - he says not to spend much more than £500 but my dad (who is paying) is willing to over
Do use the dmxdimension website CAT suggested. Start with one of their options, then at the checkout add in another dell 10% off voucher, or if the total price is too low, there's also a £70 off code for XPS machines. You'll be able to spec it high for not too high a price that way.

btw the newer sandy bridge CPUs denoted i3-2xxx, i5-2xxx,i7-2xxx will give more bang for your buck, longer battery life and significantly better graphics performance than the original core i3-xxx, i5-xxx, i7-xxx machines.
Have a look at this one for example:

listed on the dmx site XPS model # N00X5M01
