Overclocking issues.

Hi guys first post on the site, reccomended by a friend.

I have been having issues when overclocking. I have been overclocking my intel q6600 (2.4 stock) to 3.5 booting fine and all seems well. When i read the bios on post its says it is running two cpus at 3.5. When i check in windows task manager and device manager it appears as four.

When running this setup i can start a game of crysis 2 and within 5 minutes the becomes very jerky and unplayable.

When i set the bios back to factory settings. Bios post displays four cpus at 2.4 and crysis 2 is playable on extreme settings with no jerkyness?

So basically has anyone else had these issues and if so how did you overclock and maintain the use of all four cores?

Any help will be much appreciated.

2 physical cores is correct, they are both hyper threaded to appear as 4. so bios is correct as well as task manager. and its not stable at that speed so back it off as it sounds like your overheating the CPU.

Ok thank you for reply, but i still dont understand why it jumps from sayin 4 cpus stock to 2cpus when oc is applied..

Q6600 was was 4 physical cores without hyper-threading (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=29765).

The way it lasts for a while and then dies would certainly suggest over-heating or possibly insufficient voltage. The latter of witch could account for the BIOS showing 2 CPUs showing at start-up when there is high usage but when you get to the desktop and start task manager there is lower load all four cores show. Just a guess though.

Definitely a sign that the overclocks failed. The Q6600 is basically 2 dual core packages wrapped up together, so the fact that you are showing up as effectively a single duat core indicates that one of those packages aint registering correctly. Try squeezing your VCore voltage up a bit...
