I have TS-509 at home and we recently bought two 419s at work - brilliant devices so far.
What you looking to use for them for apart from the obvious? :)
My current NAS is used for iSCSI in my main PC (I only have an SSD in my PC to keep it quiet), I have a VMWare box as well as a Citrix XenServer box so I will use it to backup the VMs, I rSync my mail and websites back from the datacenter, Streaming HD films around the house and CCTV / Motion detection security.
Oh and most important to have a cool looking bit of tech on my desk! :D

I use mine for iSCSI/NFS traffic to and from the ESXi, rsync backs stuff up without issues as well. Don't have any cameras in my place so cannot comment on CCTV capabilities - options are there just no kit to test it...
720/1080p videos are processed using PS3 Media Server, works great. You can use Twonky as well [its built-in]
Also it ticks cool looking bit of tech on the desk :P
What you might want to do is to compare the ARM version vs the Intel version. Certain QPKGs [packages] are only available for Inter versions purely because of the CPU instructions which aren't available on non x86 platform. PS3 Media Server is one of them, CrashPlan and many others. Quite a lot is available for both i.e. ARM/Intel but not everything.
When it comes to high def stuff you ideally want a bit beefier CPU to help out if you need to transcode - PS3/X360 for example will not play many video formats [.mkv for example] and will need this transcoded on the fly. This is where ARM CPU will not cut it anymore - simply not enough juice. Streaming will be fine as its relying on the receiving device to do the heavy lifting.

I have used FreeNAS and OpenFiler, infact I use both as VMs in the datacenter for iSCSI but at home I just wanted a nice hastle free NAS, The only thing that needed CLI was getting rSync over SSH setup with the NAS as a target from another none QNap box, nothing too hard if you know your linux.
this box is silent, does my CCTV recording (no need for a DVR) Internal Nagios server, rSync taget for datacenter backups, iSCSI taget for my gaming PC, laptop and media center, iSCSI for my VMWare box, and will also (eventually) upload my pictures etc to Amazon S3. I Can now retire my FreeNAS server, DVR and WHS!

QNAP do great little boxes, power consumption is minimal with great performance. The killer thing is the feature list! It would take weeks to setup from scratch...
