I didn't buy it because I could unlock, in fact the thread I made here pretty much said that. I was after bang per buck, which the HD6950 was the best for. It was the guys here who convinced me to unlock it, I was more than happy to keep it as it is. However having unlocked it and gained the additional shaders, I'm chuffed with it. And it won't blow up because the voltage has remained the same as HD6950 levels not HD6970 ;)

The smart unlock is the shader unlock bios flash, then overclock the card manually to whatever you are comfortable with or what it can get to.

I have no idea when the next generation will come out.
The issue (if you can call it that) with the HD 6xxx series and the GTX 5xx is that both are just effectively refinements of the previous generation. HD 6xxx series basically wacked the HD 5xxx series on to a smaller pcb and added slightly improved tesselation and on the higher end cards bigger framebuffers. The GTX 5xx series was just getting the heat and power draw on fermi under control.
Case in point I just bought one of the sapphire extreme HD 5850s for £100. It is on the same pcb as the HD 6850 I think so all I am missing out on is the extra tessellation performance which as CT5 pointed out in another post somewhere doesn't make any difference because the HD 5850 does better the Hd 6850 in all the current games. So basically the previous gen card is cheaper and "better" for the current games. I was going from a single 512mb HD 4850 so it was a bit different but basically with the current gen with 2 crossfired 4870s you really are going to have to spend mega bucks to see a marked improvement unless you game on a silly resolution or have a silly number of screens.
It is a tough situation you are in but I think you best bet is to wait it out for a generation of cards that is more than just a refinement. Just out of interest what fps are you getting on games at the moment.

The HD6900 series introduced the new VLIW4 shaders which are going to be found in the HD7000 series. AFAIK,the HD7000 series is being released at the end of this year or early next year.

ARMA2 - 47FPS on their internal benchmark @ 1920x1080 with a few things on high, most things on medium (tried to take a SS but it just took one of my desktop instead. joy).
