Largest consumer SSDs?

Hello,

I currently have a 180GB SSD as my windows storage drive, along with most of my software. All my gaming applications are on another drive, a 1TB HDD. That way, whenever I'm not gaming, the hard drive isn't being accessed and spins down (less noise/vibration).

I decided recently to try and see if I can replace the HDD with an SSD. The costs are becoming more manageable now; some decent SSDs are priced at around £0.50 per GB. The problem is finding one in the capacity I need.

1TB is probably OTT for my gaming at the moment as I'm only using half of that. I'd guesstimate however that over the next few years I could get close to that limit with gaming software (I use two flight simulators also, which have a major storage footprint). So I'd be looking for an SSD with a capacity close to 1TB.

At the moment, it seems the largest SSDs, at least the kind that are remotely affordable (the typical SATA based 2.5/3.5" form factor ones), are around 500-600GB in size. Anyone know of any larger ones on the market now, or how long we can expect to wait before they are readily available?

I've considered putting two ~500GB SSDs in raid 0, but it would be more hassle/cost than I'd be prepared to put up with.

I (and many others here) advise you against SSD in RAID 0, you will be a lot better off by waiting for the 960GB SSD to come out.

What if you would use 2x 512GB SSD as TWO separated drives? One for media files, one for games?

Windows 8 does allow you to use storage spaces which is how I am using an 128Gb and a 64Gb ssd to run my games setup.

As others have said do NOT do RAID-0 with SSDs. It doesn't buy you anything. Inside the SSDs themselves are a number of chips all configured as RAID anyway. Windows will let you mount volumes as sub volumes of other volumes - eg I had a smallish bootdisk as C: and presented an iSCSI volume as c:\iscsi.

So you could have d:\ as your 1st SSD and d:\<flightsims> as your 2nd one.

Yeah, it wasn't my intention to use RAID and it does seem especially inefficient when using SSDs. The 960GB Crucial drive looks like what I'm after - any idea if competitors will be coming out with similar models or is it just Crucial at this time?

sadly its no longer 0.50p per gb now for ssd , its crept back up to £1 per gb for the high end stuff
