    Quiet cooling for AMD system

A moment of your time good Sir (or Madam).

My old Xigmatek Scorpion is having a whale of a time, filling my living room with the sound of a horde of angry bees. The 5850 keeping it company is hardly helping the sound situation.

So, any suggestions on a quiet, decent (and not horrendously expensive preferably) CPU cooler for an AM3 board? Heard good things about the Gelid Tranquillo, anyone have one and care to share?

Re: Quiet cooling for AMD system

    cpu?
cpu settings? (overclock?, voltage?, idle and load temperatures?)
    motherboard?
    Fan settings?
    case?

What have to identify and fix the issue currently?

in general a good low cost & quiet cpu cooler is the xigmatek HDT-S1283 (ie the same cooler as the one you have)

AMD Phenom II X3 720 on stock voltage, overclocked using multiplier only to 3.2GHz.

Cooling performance isn't as important to me as noise level. I'm using a Casecom 6788 case, which despite being quite capable for a cheap as chips purchase, dampens virtually no sound at all. It's set up with 2x120mm fans, one intake and one rear vent.

Re: Quiet cooling for AMD system

    Ok so
    what motherboard?
how's the cpu cooler fan pluged in?
    how's it setup?
what are your current temperatures at idle and load?
what 120mm case fans are these?
    How are they setup?

When you're after quiet air cooling then the bigger and slower the fans the better.
Your problem could be as simple as the fan control is not correctly setup and so it's running too fast when idle or even at 100% at all times, replacing the cooler will not solve that, but 30seconds in the BIOS would.
