If somebody were to have £1000 lying around ready to build a PC with what do you think would be the best specs I could get for my cash! Bang of buck is very important as this will be my only major buy for a while!

I think "Dream set-up" might be a bit ambitious but you'd probably get yourself a nice games pc with that - I'd personally go for something like this:
Case: Antec Sonata
CPU: A64 3000
HSF: Zalman 7000
MOBO: Gigabyte Nvidia 250Gb
HDD: SATA 200Gb
GFX: X800Pro
DVDRW: 8x +/-RW
Sound: Audigy 2
Speakers: 5.1 (basic)
Mouse: Logitech MX???
Keyboard: any
That shouldn't go over your target
that's missing a monitor tho
A grand aint gonna get a dream PC with a monitor....those Radeon X800 XT's are nearly half the budget
right.....you gotta decide whether you want to blast £75 on a CRT or £300 on a TFT

yeah, FX55 & X800XT PE....ooo, where's the budget gone???
Wisely spent tho a grand will get you a pretty serious gaming rig, A64 3200/p4 2.8, rad 9800pro, 1dg PC3200ram, sata hdd.
And I still prefer CRT's for gaming.
Still, the setup you already have is none too shabby by the looks of things.

Yer I missed out the RAM - well I was in a rush
1GB of 3500 (at the very least) - preferably corsair XMS or equiv.
if you stretched to 1500 you could up the X800Pro to an X800 XT and spend more on the mobo (the Deluxe NF3 250Gb's) and consider getting yourself a RAPTOR primary drive (for Games and OS) and having the larger SATA as a data drive.
CRT is def preferable to LCD for gaming - if you spend a bit on a good one.
The A64's overclock very nicely on the NF3 boards (speaking from personal experience) so you should be able to run it @ 2.3 to 2.4Ghz which will be around A64 3800 speeds (and very nice too). With the X800 you'll have yourself a rig worthy of Mordor (and Doom3/HL2 at the very least)
Ah well, I had hoped that £1500 would get me somthing of a cutting edge system but back to the millstone to earn more methinks

Mine was pretty cutting edge when I got it, but even with £2000+ I had to compromise with the processor (and all the stuff that goes with an FX chip)...and I'd have loved a 1600x1200 TFT, but that was just too much money.

n' no doubt you can find cheaper prices than i've roughly added up. personally i'd wait for socket 939 though, though it will be more expensive
you can always spend more, but i doubt any stock system will outperform what i've listed by more than 10% or so, only real improvement on that system i can think of is an FX53 and some raptor/scsi hard drives, though the hitachi 250's you can get for the price i've listed aren't far off raptor speeds for being much bigger and cheaper.

Yer £1500 for just the system should get you something very tasty

rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishey I wouldn't go for the Asus K8VSE board - it's pretty pish poor imo, compatability wise and overclocking.
Also you are better off getting an Antec Sonata with 380W PSU for slightly less than the coolermaster without - unless, of course you are struck on the design of the CM o'course
Def worth waiting for the X800 XT as well over the pro - although you might be able to soft-mod the pro, there's not much in the price difference to worry.
And for the price of that 120Gb you might as well get a 160
I would also go for the Zalman 7000 (all copper) HSF as it has exceptional performance and is quiet too - very heavy tho.
£1500 still wont get you a dream PC but a very high speced one.
