Looking for a decent small laptop?

    Hi,

I'm looking for a new laptop - a 14" or 13." inch or whatever size the come in... I don't want another 15.6" laptop, and I want decent battery life. And ideally better than my current (nearly 3 yr old) laptop, and <£400 ideally (oh and i don't want a netbook - i want to be able to put dvds in it)

Not much to ask for... my current laptop is a Dell vostro 1510, core 2 duo 1.8ghz (T5670), 2gb ram, 250gb hdd, has an SD card reader built in (important)

    Cheers,

    Josh

I would look at the Toshiba R630:

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/tosh...-dixons/930321

It has a reinforced magnesium alloy frame and decent battery life. I have handled one myself and was impressed by the build quality for the price.

Here is a review of the laptop:

    Does this look okay?

The Toshiba looks very nice - but over-budget.

Re: Looking for a decent small laptop?

I was looking for one a couple of months back, there's some good suggestions in here http://forums.hexus.net/small-form-f...ng-laptop.html

I cannot remember which ones where finally agreed upon I think it was the samsung Q330-JA08UK which is a bit out of your budget.

You could have a look at the HP ProBook 5320m as HP are currently doing a trade in offer, oh sorry never mind that ended at the end of april.

yeah just looking at them, q330 13" £449 - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsu...0_1048113.html, and q430 14" £429 - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsu...0_1065333.html pretty sure this was £399 on amazon or somewhere the other month - should have bought it when I saw it.

Re: Looking for a decent small laptop?

Of these I think these are the best (with best at the top):
Samsung Q430 + Q330 both have 4gb ram, the Q430 has nvidia dedicated graphics as well, is 2.1kg vs 2.2 for most, 320gb vs 250gb hd for most (the q330 has 500gb), and the price is good on the q430.

I ruled out the Lenovo as it has 2gb, likewise the L630-166, and the ASUS UL30A due to low cpu speed, and lack of optical drive (although it is the lightest, and one of the cheapest).

The Acer 4820T (Aspire, £349 refurb) is fairly decent, but has a slightly slower i3 chip, and is refurb. The Acer TimelineX 4820T is not too bad, but doesn't stand out compared to the Q430.

Re: Looking for a decent small laptop?

You can always add more memory, however the Lenovo's where ruled out by me for lack of optical drive, not much use if you want to watch dvd's

One thing in the HP pro book's favour is that it's using faster 7200rpm hard drives

Re: Looking for a decent small laptop?

The Samsung Q430 arrived today - it's very nice - certainly smaller than the Vostro 1510, quicker, and much better looking... but, am I wrong to expect it to be silent when the CPU is idle at 1-3% usage? The fan, although quiet, always seems to be on. The Vostro 1510 is silent in comparison when the CPU is at around 10% usage, and only becomes loud when under load... perhaps I'm expecting too much, and just used to a quiet laptop :/

I had a 13" Lenovo thinkpad edge /w intel CULV, 8 hours battery life.

I was very satisfied with it. Shame I gave it away to a relative...thinking of it I shouldn't be so nice with them

Have a look at Acer Aspire One netbooks, nice colors and good looking too. I like them to be really thin and nice 10.1 Inch screen with (1024 x 600) resolution. Really striking design
