    After new PSU

As some people can guess i've come into some pennys (lots of extra hours at work actually) Anyway i think it is about time i upgraded my zalman 750w psu! To start with...the system it will be powering!

    mATX motherboard msi...
    core i5 750 OC'd to 3.4ghz
    500gb hdd
    dvd drive
    4gb memory ddr3
    evga gtx 460 SSC

So ye not that much power is needed but i want no lower than a 700watt psu, ideally i would like a 750watt but anything above 700 should do! Ive picked a few and wouldnt mind some thoughts on them...

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/700w-...-12v-135mm-fan

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/850w-...-12v-135mm-fan

Now, one other thing, i really want to make sure it is modular! i cannot stand having loads of cables to tidy up and will pay the extra

Any other suggestions are welcomed! and i want to stick to the £100 mark or less but i will stretch above it if worth it! thanks!

    Re: After new PSU

The 700W PSUs seem to be overpriced IMHO.

The 600W version of the Silent Pro Gold costs £37 less than the 700W version:

You don't need anything near 700W.

    Re: After new PSU

A decent 500W to 600W PSU should do the job and as snootyjim mentioned 700W is OTT.

I still don't understand why an extra 100W means a 50% increase in price though.

    Seasonic: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/520w-...-12v-120mm-fan

    Corsair: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...-12v-120mm-fan

Both extremely popular PSUs. Corsair in particular has excellent customer service. Further, lots of PSUs are based on that seasonic model.

    Re: After new PSU

So looks like i dont need it lol, well this does make my life alot easier! so has anyone used the 600watt silent pro?

Pushed it down to these two...

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/600w-...s12v-135mm-fan

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/700w-...-12v-135mm-fan

yes yes i know i don't need 700watt but it would after all be future proof But do i need it? and is it worth the extra £10 as the other seems to have some pros compared to it, the major difference is the amp on the 12 volt rail

    Re: After new PSU

    Yes, massively.

I think what you have to remember with all of these systems is that they don't specify which brand to buy, because they might get sued.

There's a colossal difference between a 700W £15 PSU and a 700W Corsair/Seasonic. If all these sites and graphics cards manufacturers said you need a 500W PSU, meaning a 500W Corsair, and then everyone went out and bought a 500W budget PSU that was actually a over-rated 300W unit, then it wouldn't work. So to be safe they put stupidly high numbers on everything.

As I said earlier, that Scan rig is 400W at gaming load, with 560 SLI and a 4.7 GHz processor! I reckon 500W would be ample, go for 600W if you desperately want something bigger but even 500 should give you headroom for another graphics card later on.

    Re: After new PSU

It is better to leave headroom, as efficency tails off closer to 100% load you get. Also gives room for future proofing to some extent, so if you need 600W go for 700W at least imo, as if you want to upgrade to a newer graphics card or a faster cpu then you'll need the extra room.

I also agree with this, getting something for the long run, will ensure the psu can be carried over for many an upgrade. My hx620 over 4 yrs old has powered numerous systems/config in that time in my main rig, it has now made its way to one of my folders. Been looking at the Corsair Professional Series Gold AX 1200W for my next long term, seen it as low as £192+

Also been having a serious look at the Adata HM series 1200W@£140 looks very good, got a good review on kitguru

600W silent pro gold should be enough, unless the 700W version not more than £10 expensive.

you should be able to power that on a good 500w psu, I'm powering more hard drives (4 now) a higher power consuming card (the 260 uses slightly more than the 460) on an Enermax 625w and before that it was running a pair of 9800gtx in sli which raises the draw by about 100w
