    Recommend A Fan Please

    Hi,

Ok, to start I have a Q6600 overclocked to 3.0Ghz.

I had problems with my old HAF 932 as I thought it was quite noisy, but all my stuff in a new case and its errr still noisy, but some old parts I had left lying around in my HAF 932 and the thing is silent!

Can't believe it, but anyway I like my new case and there are only 2 things that are the same in terms of using fans, which is the CPU cooler and my graphics card.

My CPU fan is a Titan Fenrir and my graphics card is a Gainward GTX260 Golden Sample(it uses dual fans).

Can anyone recommend replacements for both of these bearing in mind the CPU is overclocked and something that is pretty much silent or at least a lot quieter than what I have now. Water cooling is not really a route I want to go down because of the expense.

    Many thanks for any help
    Jon

    Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced

51CFM @ 19dBA, so reasonable airflow and very quiet. £41

    Review: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/coo...ock-advanced/3

3.0GHz isn't a massive overclock so if you wanted to save some cash an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Pro would be a good bet for £25ish.

As for the 260, do you want quiet replacement cards, or replacement heatsinks for the existing 260?

Ideal, thank you for the link, I will check out the reviews.

As for the 260, not looking to replace the card to be honest, its still a good card and have no issues with it, more inline with replacing the heatsinks.

    Thanks and regards

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

I would seriously consider one of these: http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vg...ro.html?c=2182

They're expensive, but they are pretty much the best around imo.

As for the fans, I'd consider getting some Scythe Slipstreams and undervolting to 5V, strap one to each side of the Fenrir and it should be silent.

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

You do NOT need a new CPU heatsink! Just clean up the dust out of it and maybe the replace the fans with Scythe Slipstreams as suggested. You can buy them with RPM as low as 800.

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

Thanks for the advice, going to check out all those options.

As for dust there is none, as I said, it all went into a new case, and all parts were air dusted before going in there. I am fanatical about keeping the pc clean lol. Which incidently was a nightmare with the HAF932.

    *Sigh*

Start off, find the sources of the noise. Do NOT just buy random stuff in the hopes it fixes the problem, when you don't know what's causing the issue in the first place.

Watch this http://tv.hexus.net/show/2008/11/Pac...e_s_the_noise/ pay attention, carry out the tests yourself on your own pc.
Then once you've correctly identified the sources of noise you will have a better idea of what needs changing.

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

    Thanks for the input

I know the source of the noise as I said in my opening post. Its a brand new case, my old case which I thought was loud was silent.

The only two things that are the same that have a fan in them are the graphics card and the CPU cooler. The graphics card fan I have been meaning to change for a while and the CPU cooler is my main suspect.

I am not new to building PC's, have been doing it for 17 years. I am not trying to find out the cause of the noise, I am trying to find replacements that will run cool and quiet, which is something I don't normally buy, hence why I am looking for people who know there stuff to recommend replacements for said fans

    Thanks & Regards

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

Well the fact that you got a new case because you thought it was the old one that was the issue, shows what I'm saying.

Check your fans, find out which it is that's causing the problem
ps a good way to stop a fan when the system is already on it to press on the central hub, not the blades, sticking something into the blades when a fan is spinning is a route to losing a fan blade, I've done that by accident, once a fan has a damaged blade balance goes, making it very noisy and vibrate a lot.

On the cpu cooler, I'd check the rpm & PWM settings, asus motherboards are not the most friendly for PWM settings, you need to have Q-Fan turned on in the BIOS then make adjustments with asus utility "Fan Xpert" in windows http://driveragent.com/0/archive/2ed...5?q=asus+xpert
You'll have to play around to get good profile, I'd suggest 100% speed at around 60c and 20% at around 30c
Ideally you want the lowest point at around 800rpm or lower and no more than 1000rpm, on a 120mm fan for it to be near silent.

On the GPU, again the gainward should be pretty quiet at idle, getting louder under load.
You should be able to adjust the fan speeds with the gainward expert tool http://www.gainward.com/support/vga/...ol_NV_7_20.zip
Play with the settings, try to keep the temperatures below 80c when under heavy load.

Before buying any fans (let alone a heatsink!) download speedfan and have a play. At 3GHz, that Titan looks beefy enough to not need a 120mm fan on 100%!

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

Many thanks Pob, can't believe this, I had Q-Fan disabled in the bios, I did it a couple of years ago when I was testing the new heatsink and fan and forgot to turn it back on, the fan has been running at 2200rpm for 2 years! Turned it on and its nearly silent! Thanks again mate

And Shaithis, your right, the Titan is a massive heatsink by itself let alone with the fan on it lol

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

It terms of fan for a heatsink nothing can beat gentle typhoons. Never look at the specs manufacturers provide they are a fairytale.

For heatsink duties nothing really comes too close to the gentle typhoons in the 120x120x25 form factor in terms of cfm/dba for all of the fans in the range.

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

An extremely quick test with Prime95, shows the processor now idle at 35 degrees C with fan speed at 835rpm(40%), with load at 52 degrees C with fan speed at 1917rpm(90%).

I assume Fan Xpert loads at Windows startup? I have it just set to the standard Profile, I assume thats the right one to use.

    Re: Recommend A Fan Please

I'd probably make a custom profile, but that sounds good*

On the Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm, they come in a range of speeds, and some of the high speed ones are far from quiet. However they great in restricted air flow situations.
That said the best PWM fans I've come across are the Akasa Apache & Venom, both of which are made by Scythe, they are basically S-Flex fans with a tweeked blade shape and PWM function, same high density plastic, same sony bearing, same silent motor.

*pun fully intended, I'm not playing this by ear you know.
