    Need a new mouse

I've got a Logitech MX1000 at the moment, and it's the best thing I've ever used. Sadly, the left button is becoming unreliable (think it's just plain worn out) and I need a new mouse. The only problem is, I can't get the 1000 any more, and even the 1100 is scarce to the point of extinction. The closest thing I can find is the G700 and that's ridiculously priced at £65!!

So... need suggestions - doesn't matter if it's wired or wireless, but it must have lots of buttons

    Re: Need a new mouse

I recommend the Logitech g500 - I used the g5 for years and still working well. mx518 is good but the feet don't last as long. Definitely go Logitech - customer service is the best. Both mx518 and g500 have the thumb buttons which are invaluable. g500 has a laser so you can attach it to a shark. Out of the two I would pick the g500 - you use a mouse loads so the price difference over the mx518 isn't that much when you think how important it is.

    Re: Need a new mouse

I was desperately trying to get rid of an MX1000 on here a few months back, couldn't shift it for a tenner and ended up flogging it on eBay!

There must be a few floating around second hand?

I agree it's an awesome mouse, just didn't have any need for it after I quit my job.

    Re: Need a new mouse

Ask Logitech. I know it's miles out of warranty, but I had success with an admittedly recently out of warranty MX Revolution which I didn't even have an invoice for (as it was bought from Hexus.classifieds) and they didn't even ask. Just said that they didn't stock the MX Revolution any longer, so they'd send out a Performance MX instead (an upgrade and a more expensive mouse at that).

Play dumb - the worst you can get is a "no" and you're back to square one.

As for a replacement - I've been looking recently for a decent wireless mouse (ie one with the side buttons for back & forward) for around £20-30 for a build I'm doing for someone, and from Logitech and Microsoft, I could only find 1 suitable mouse between Scan and Ebuyer. The market is flooded with bloody notebook mice.

    Razers ???

Side buttons for moving left and right are on Microsoft's Intellimouse 1.1 or the Comfort mouse range from them.

Yeah I was looking at the G500 - the 518 is a good suggestion but I think it looks a bit naff - plus it's only got 2 buttons on the side - the MX1000 has 3 and I use them all.

I'm not sure I'd get very far with asking Logitech to replace it tbh - I've had it apart to see if there was anything I could do, but the switch (which a nice heavy duty microswitch to be fair) looks like a sealed unit and in my experience, when a switch that chunky starts to go potty there's nothing can be done for it anyway. Looks like it is literally clicked out.

    Re: Need a new mouse

I would feel hard at spending nearly £100 on something that looks like that and it hasn't got the side-scrolling wheel either as far as I can tell. I use that too.

    ^ That

Its solidly built, comfortable, well priced and well specced.

For the price even if you didn't like it you could buy another mouse and keep it as a spare (I haven't met anyone that didn't like it though). Also, how important are the aesthetics when your hand will be covering it?

    Re: Need a new mouse

Needs loads of buttons, how many buttons is loads? Heres my recommendation:
    Microsoft Sidewinder x8

Amazing wireless mouse, better than anything out their imo and it seems the general critics agree. Has 2 side buttons, 3 dpi setting buttons(these cant be changed to do other things except different levels of dpi), games explorer button in middle (you know the game section in windows vista/7, thats it... surprisingly its very good with win7) On the fly macro record button on left side, knotched scroll wheel that can go vertical and horizontal and did i mention it has an LCD display?

Wireless is extremely reliable, no lag and its just so much better than wired due to no friction and its still fairly light (i dont notice the weight if im honest, they all feel the same once you used them a few times). The sensor is using MS bluetrack tech which is a big improvement over laser so very reliable in terms of detecting movement.

Oh and another thing, the AMAZING play and charge device it uses... honest to god this is the best thing for a wireless mouse ever, cable attaches to the mouse via 3 magnets and doesnt fall off (unless you pull it out, its never fallen out while ive used it though), of course you do get some cable friction back as its essentially going wired(still uses wireless signal though) however it only takes me a little while to charge the mouse to full and it lasts like almost a week!(impressive as its on 24/7 and used like 12/7)

All buttons except the dpi buttons can be reassigned to do things i think, havent really needed more than the 2 left side buttons. The software MS use looks basic but it does the job incredibly well, macros easy to do and there is a huge array of predefined settings you can use so for example you can use a setting called "precision boost" on a button so when you press it it changes the dpi to X amount of a %, e.g. i have mine at 3000dpi and if i press it i have it set to changing the dpi to 15% of the original value, you can also have it as a toggle dpi setting or a press and hold which is nice.

    overall its an epic mouse!.

Now onto another important part (i think it is anyway), support! Microsoft is without a doubt THE best in terms of warranty support, instant replacements and your warranty is renewed on every replacement. I asked for new feet as i had worn them down to a noticeable level (im sensitive to this, my mate said they were fine! Did i mention you get 3 sets of feet?) and well they said they didnt sell to the public (fair does) but instead arranged for a BRAND new mouse sent to me so i could use the new feet (and ofc the mouse woo!).

    Re: Need a new mouse

I went for the G500 eventually - it arrived today and it's pretty awesome. It does everything I want as well as the MX1000 did, and has some features that even better. Massive amount of cable - no noticeable extra friction, and the cable's sheath is braided fabric instead of the plastic you usually get. I have to confess to loving the customisable weight too. Been playing with it all day and I think I've got it spot on at 10.7g Love it.
