How good is the OCZ Vertex generation one??

I managed to get a 60GB one off OcUK for £60 on special offer(even though I am quite skint ATM). I know you can get better 60GB drives for £80 to £100 but did I waste my money??

I am going to be using it with Vista 64 bit.

It's fine, you'll notice a huge improvement in access times over a mechanical disk.

Just about any SSD is many times faster than a standard HDD.

It's not justa bout boot times - very noticeable in daily use.

Re: How good is the OCZ Vertex generation one??

I know that Vista does not support TRIM so are there any good third party utilities for garbage collection??

I am using an H67 motherboard.

That SSD does not do trim but has built in garbage collection as its a Sandforce drive if I'm not mistaken.

Nope. Vertex 1 is indilinx, not SF. There is a known issue with early firmware, so make sure it's recently updated. Used performance does degrade with lack of trim, but it's only noticeable on writes.

I thought this drive supports TRIM??

So do I need to use a third party tool for garbage collection??

Trim needs windows 7. Or a secure erase of the whole disk.

If you leave your machine idle for three hours it'll do garbage collection on the drive (built in), but you might want to run the user initiated version of the program directly every once in a while:

Re: How good is the OCZ Vertex generation one??

I've got the same SSD (well, 64GB G.Skill Falcon - it's the same though, even firmware compatible) and it's great. TBH I've not noticed any faster boot times with Vista, but once it's booted apps do load noticeably faster and Ubuntu boots in seconds and flies! There is a tool that does the job of trim here but I've not tried it as I'm on an old firmware version and don't want to flash as it wipes the drive.

My SSD is almost 2 years old now, has been used fairly heavily and has never been TRIMmed. I turned off Vista's auto-defrag and indexing but other than that I've done no ssd-longevity tweaks. If I remember I'll post some crystaldiskmark benches when I get home to see how slow it's got.

For some reason I thought your SSD was one of the newer ones!! Having seen your one in action it will do the job very nicely!!

Re: How good is the OCZ Vertex generation one??

    Just great!!

Aria put up some of their earlier deals for a few minutes although they sold out quickly. They had the following drives for £60 and £65 respectively excluding delivery:

    http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=42530

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=42719

I get free delivery from OcUK so the drives are around £70 with delivery but they are both faster!!

Re: How good is the OCZ Vertex generation one??

Sooo, after running crystaldiskmark as promised earlier it seems that either something's wrong with my SSD/pc or 2 years without trim is worse than I expected:

SSD on the left, WD 1tb green drive on the right.

Time to clone my SSD, boot the clone to flash the latest firmware to the SSD, clone it back and see if it helps my write speed at all...
