But this would be custom built , how could they know without making an assumption or knowing the cost of all the cards etc inside ?

They will open it up and have a look, or contact the people that sent it. A return address is required for it to be sent. Or the really quick and easy is to see how much it is insured for.

Are you seriously thinking of having a rig built and having it sent uninsured?

They will just add up the value of the goods and levy a charge, if its a custom build they will just get the value of the components online and charge against that. If its declared a gift thats only covers you to £40, and that includes postage and any insurance costs

    No.. I was getting frustrated..

It went for almost half the price of what a damm graphics card cost over here

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

it would of cost me £70.00 in shipping

but who knows how much in customs.

Even with a third added on or whatever id still be 100 less than anything scan could offer...

and it would have been already built too

Using an online duty tool, with £70 shipping and no additional insurance
    http://www.dutycalculator.com/

    Total customs value:

    £410.23

    Import duty:

    £0.00

    Import VAT:

    £82.05

Total import duty & VAT due:

    £82.05

You would also have a handling fee of between £8-£15

Re: Buying US PC s & products ?

You can get some ideas on costs by looking at Overstock.com.

They guarantee to include all duties etc in your order with them, so even if you dont want to buy from them going through to check out should give you a reasonable idea on what you will end up paying.

As far as PSUs now, I havent encountered a PSU that wasnt 115-240V auto switching for a long time. I remember my dads old pentium 3 PC wasnt turning on once, so I decided that the switch on the back of the PSU might be an on switch. It turns out it was the 115-230V switch.... there was smoke.
