Am I being thick, stupid or both?
Would somebody please enlighten me,
Is waiting for Bulldozer a good idea?
is it:-
Going to give a substantial performance boost over a high end i7 rig?(performance that justifies the wait)
Value for money (new always carries a premium)
I really am chomping at the bit to get on with my first build can you tell....?
At the moment the only benefit, I can see is that i7s will drop in price,or am I missing the point?
The question I really need answered is
£ for £ (2k budget) will bulldozer/ highend Am3 wipe the arse of an i7 rig?
Again please help.
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
Wait until it is released and then you will know how fast it will be.
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
whats your current PC like? (thats if you have one and your not just posting from school/work PC)
if its anything from the last 6 years, then i would wait for bulldozer.
if its from before then. P4 1.8ghz, 512mb ram and agp graphics for example., then just lump it for another month or 2 and wait for bulldozer.
if you must have a PC now because theres a new game out that you need to play with your mates, then just go round their house and play it there, if they are proper mates they understand your dilema and let you lump it for another month or so while waiting for bulldozer.
or you could just accept the fact, that computer tech is moving so fast these days and there is always something brand new and twice as fast out in another month or so. then just get whats best 'bang for buck' at this present point in time.
happy to help :p
and nobody really knows how fast bulldozer will be in the real world, its all just synthetic benchmarks and subjective information at the moment. you're just going to have to wait until its been out a week or so for the 'real world' information to filter through the interwebs, then make your mind up. :)

A couple of points
Im 45, the only kids I play with are the God/grand kids
6850, p5n32-e sli plus 4Gb ram (Done me well for five years)showing its age and maturity
Wait for bulldozer isn't really an answer to any of my questions is it....?
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
if you can wait then id suggest to, as with all technology these days they are released so fast!
ignoring that id still wait simply because bulldozer is AMD actually using a different architect for their chips, all previous chips have been just changes here and there since the old athlon days iirc so there SHOULD be a great performance difference, essentially AMD has been doing pretty much what they had done with the 5000--->6000 gpu as its just an improvement here and there and a bit bigger where as cpu has been the same but actually changing what process it uses and now it should be a big difference, if its not then i guess they will come back tough as ever with the bulldozer mk2 :D.
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
What CPU do you have?? I have a Q6600 and an HD5850 1GB on a 975X motherboard which is from late 2006 and the system still runs many modern games fine.
Bulldozer will be the first new AMD CPU architecture since the Athlon 64 over 7 years ago. Waiting a month or two is not that long IMHO and it is not like the Sandy Bridge CPUs are suddenly going to disappear.
There are no reliable benchmarks for the CPU so it is hard to say whether it will be better than a CPU like the Core i7 2600K for example.

actually it is, if you read the last line of my post about the realworld benchmarks and comparing when bulldozers actualy out, itll answer the question then.
anything up until the bulldozers out, is just guessing and nobody really knows anything.
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
If there's nothing out that you want to play but can't (at least with some settings turned down) then I'd wait. I've been itching to upgrade since at least January but I'm waiting to see how Bulldozer pans out. Current speculation suggests Bulldozer will be released on the 11th June, even if availability is initially limited you'll at least be able to see comparisons with Sandybridge- it's only 2 weeks or so...

He said 6850, I assume it's Intel's C2D E6850, running at 3GHz, IIRC?
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
You can't post on a technology forum expecting not to be informed! Safest option is to wait a little.
What is the rig to be used for? You can always buy the other components sans mobo/CPU/ram and rebuild using your current gear. Swap out mobo/cpu/ram when you decide.
Answer ot the last question is probably not. But the value factor may look better and with AMD most possibly back in the game CPU news may start becoming competative.
The next die shrink on GPUs is expected later in the year too so it may be worth hanging in there!

For some reason I thought he meant an HD6850 1GB!! Doh!!

It probably is an answer but I think you probably need some more justification than that.
I would wait for bulldozer (unless you have and absolutly dying need to spend your money) for a number of reasons.
1) This introduction hints of a real change to how a CPU works and a substantial increase in processing power. If AMD continue to use lower prices as an ongoing incentive then coupled with the technological advances you could end up with a really good value for money package.
2) Even if you decide against Bulldozer it is very likely that it will cause price reductions across the board.
Like you I was "Chomping at the bit" so went ahead and purchased all the necessary kit. 6 weeks later I could have picked up my HD5850 for £50 less because of the introduction of the HD6xxx series GPUs and my PSU dropped £30 because of the introduction of a newer model.
9 months on I can build the entire rig for half the price...it will still play all the new games on highest settings without problems and run all my image / business software.
My advice is wait until the end of June and you will have a good idea of the current market and like as not get more for your money.
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
Now thats what I call an answer,
Thanks, Attila the Bun.
It was purely by chance (of which I am whole heartedly glad of) I came across your site.
My impatience stems from the fact, I had made my choice & sourced the bits for my first self build...which may explain my eagerness to get on and start my build.
My buying plans were scuppered by CAT and others due to there good advice.
OK I fully accept I have had my Intel blinkers on... (is it a bad thing to admit I've only ever bought Intel products?)
This forum has at the very least opened my eyes to alternatives, that said where's AMD's pre sales advertisements & spec info,
Is this normal for such a key product launch?
E6850

CAT's a marvel with those component lists of his...I understand it's moose power.
What I like about the people on here is that they treat everyone with respect regardless of their level of knowledge and that they are more than happy to put you right on anything that you have misunderstood..

I was the same, but unless you are planning to build a computer that has the very best/fastest/expensive components then AMD offer a very real way to save money whilst keeping a high level of computing power. I'm not "dissing" Intel's stuff but they do use their position as number one seller to keep their prices high for people like yourself who don't realise there is an alternative worth trying.

I agree with you on this AMD are well known in the business and on forums like these but they don't have an annoying jingle tagged on to any computer advert like Intel to catch the punters' attention.
I can almost guarentee that when PCWorld or Comet advertise an AMD computer most people think it's a brand like HP or Lenovo rather than the CPU maker.
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
Am in the similar boat to waiting for amd bulldozer my present system athlon 3200 xp like the previous posters say wait a few weeks
Re: Am I being thick, stupid or both?
Apparently the release has been postponed till Q3 so it may be more than a couple of weeks wait now.
