Light laptop - not nettop
Hi, I need to find a light laptop, which has a decent sized screen and weighs no more than 2.2lbs (1kg). The former benchmark was the Dell 4200 but this is now EOL.
Anyone any ideas? It's for a corporate environment so a decent brand with decent support would be best...

I think you'll be lucky to find one that only weighs in at 1kg, my netbook weighs 1.46Kg with the battery in.
Your looking at 13.3" screen and below I would imagine?
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
Yep, 13.3 and below, and not sure if MacBook would do it, it's a Windows office. Can't believe the Dell e4200 was only 1kg actually, that's tiny, and nothing on Toshiba or HP's websites comes close...
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
1KG ?..even a Macbook Air weighs more than that. For around that weight you'll be looking at 11inch max, probably dropping down into 10inch category if that even exists for CULV laptops? e4200 looked like a one-of-a-kind for its specs!

Re: Light laptop - not nettop
Anyone had any experience of the Samsung series9?
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
There is a Sandy Bridge version of the MacBook Air coming out soon. The 11" MacBook Air does weigh around 1KG though:
http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookair/specs.html
You could put Windows on it and dual boot.
If you don't mind a laptop a bit heavier I would look at this 13.3" Samsung:
http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/p...ype=prd_detail
It is slightly lighter than the 13.3" MacBook Air.
Edit!!
Have you considered a Panasonic Toughbook??
The S9 is around 1.3KG:
http://www.panasonic.com/business/to...ook-F9.asp#/S9
The F9 is around 1.6KG and has a carrying handle too:
http://www.panasonic.com/business/to...ook-F9.asp#/F9
The Toughbooks are semi-ruggedised meaning you don't to have a case for them.
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
Lenovo U160 is an 11.6", 1.4Kg laptop with a Sandy-bridge based Celeron that shouldn't be too shabby. It's priced reasonably for an ultra-portable too at £412.
Acer Aspire Timeline 1830T is a similar size / weight but has a low voltage Core i3 instead. It costs £90 more @ £499, but as well as the better processor you also get twice as much RAM and HDD space...
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
The MacBook is not an option, the gentleman in question 'doesn't want to look like he's got it for the brand'. That Samsung alluded to by CTF is the Series 9 which I mentioned before and seems to be the one he wants. Unfortunately it only comes with Win7 HP, I think we'd want Professional. Can probably do an upgrade though...
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
What about the Toughbooks?? They are very well built. I would also have a look at the Lenovo thin and light laptops too.
Edit!!
The Samsung does seem to be made of duralumin which should make the case quite strong.
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
There's Toshiba's R-series, with the older R500 & R600 weighing in about 750grams (excluding power adapter). The newer R700 & R800 are all above your 1Kg spec, but, offer the latest in mobile and computer tech.
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
Those toughbooks seem to be US only at the mo...
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
Well the thing that will work on most laptops to get them under 1kg, is take the battery out, that alone is about half to a third of the weight of most laptops.
You can use a lower capacity battery to greatly reduce weight, which exactly what dell did with the 4200, 1kg with a shortlife 4cell battery or 1.25kg for the standard 6cell battery
A smaller screen is better for weight too, after the battery that's the 2nd heaviest thing in a laptop.

The F9 is available from a few retailers but I suspect it will be soon replaced by a version which uses Sandy Bridge processors.
Re: Light laptop - not nettop
