Something I dont get at all about Scans site.

As you know ive been in bit of dire straits trying to decide between one thing and other with these cases , but one thing I dont understand ( if it better to buy best case you can afford ) is why the most popular on the Scan site ( for mid tower at least ) dont include what youd expect and are infact all very low budget .

As for myself i think ive finally rounded it down to 3 choices..

    nxzt phantom
    Coolermaster CM 690 II Advanced
    Coolermaster elite 310
though i heard both the cooler masters had issues with noise, though TBH the 310 doesnt sound that noisy to me

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7y66...eature=related

    Coolermaster CM 690 II Advanced

Anyway i figured i there aint much point really going expensive if i dont like the case, i could pick the last 2 of amazon US pretty cheap too.

Because different people have different budgets. For many people a £30 increase in case price isn't going to bring them any performance benefit, while a £30 increase in graphic card budget will.

Yes when working to a tight budget the case is way down on the list for most people.

Looks are the other big issue, what you might like someone else may hate, so what you think looks good is a big issue.

personally I don't like the 310 front bezel, I'd prefer it with the mesh front of the 335 http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=5239 although I much prefer the extra width and hard drive bays of the 310.
I really like the UPS100 in black but for some unknown reason they sell it in Asia only http://www.coolermaster.com/product....tegory_id=3588

"Popularity" is generally just down to how many have been sold, not how good a product is.

I guess so, I know theres few cheap cases there I quite like but Im sorta awyed too by the reviews because im no well versed in comparing ever single thing and dont have much experince.

Not that my pc is great example either but its basically managed to run what iwanted even with its bad specs, so why wouldnt a even cheap case with good components do the same or better , and in the end if even with the hi-end case I only get 5 yrs then whats the point ?

After 5 yrs id probably want a new case any way.

Re: Something I dont get at all about Scans site.

More expensive cases usually have some or all of the following

    - Better build quality
    - Better cooling
    - Wire management options
    - Sound dampening
    - Easier building

If some or all of these aren't necessary then no need to spend £100+ on a case something around £40 will be fine. If you are running SLI then cheap cases will not be sufficient, hence your budget will need to increase to deal with the thermals. Further, if you are water cooling then your budget can go well over £200 on the case alone.

For example the Phantom I have is reasonably cheap compared to Lian-li or silverstone cases, but the build quality and cooling are something you would struggle to find in a £30 case.

I fail to understand why someone would spend £200 on a case to overclock... you could just buy the more expensive component (cpu/gpu) and not spend time running prime95 for hours on end...

Of course I fall down here if you already have the most expensive thing on the market

£200 on a rig with £2000 worth of components in it is passable in my eyes. Hey, apple built a whole business out of paying a premium for aesthetics.

yeh it's acceptable when everything else is top of the range, i just don't get why some people would buy overclocking oriented equipment like cases and fans whe it would be just as cheap to just buy a better cpu.

As for apple, well it's a valid business model, at the end of the day no one else makes things like macbook airs so until they do then they will always top that sector of the market

Don't forget, buy a good case and you'll have it for 10 years. Don't get that with a CPU.

10 yrs ?? well 10 yrs is too long to stare at the same piece of plastic / metal IMO

Whats wrong with getting one with a cpu , unless the cpu is bad or too expensive , or is not compatible with your other needs ? ( i notice most customs cases dont do , do it any way )

No, I'm saying that you can keep a case for 10 years - you don't get that benefit with a CPU.

You could keep a case for 10 years and it would still be a top-of-the-range rig, but obviously a 10 year old CPU will mean a very out of date machine.

I mean... it's got turn out feet for looks and extra stability. You just can't seem to get proper nerdy cases these days.

Demand a remake. A bit wider with 120mm fans. Keep the ugly thumb screws though. I have a Q6600 in one of these bad boys. >10yrs usage quite possibly.

Re: Something I dont get at all about Scans site.

TBH as everyone has said people have different budgets and priorities, I have an FT02, but im unlikely to change it for a long time since its performance is excellent and in my eyes its very aesthetically pleasing. My previous case I had for 3-4 years and the only reason I changed it was because I wanted to move away from small form factor and back to a big rig, not because I particularly wanted to change the case.

That's quite a nice case for an old beige box.
The only real issue with cases of this age is fans, they are generally designed only for 80mm fans as that's all there was back then.
With a bit of modding you could put bigger fans in it, repaint it and still use it.

There are people still happily using the Akasa Eclipse 62 and that came out back in 2005 http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?p=18145787

Ah, ok I see., .I still dont think its good idea to keep case though, not unless you really like it , or plan to mod it for advancement etc.

    Depends really.

It's pretty unlikely that a Corsair 800D will be insufficient in 10 years time.
