    Sound issues.

So after getting the CH4F installed i noticed before there was an absolutely awful crackling noise coming from my headset, which runs through an Asus D2X.

The noise is still there now. I've tried the headset using the onboard sound, it's all fine. Eventually i went into the Asus control panel and dropped the sample rate from 192kHz down to 96kHz and all is well again, no crackling/static.

However I'm not satisfied as its ran fine for a while before at 192kHz and has so since December in my Intel rig.

I've reseated the card, used different PCI-e slots and so on and 192 kHz is still a no go. The crackling/static is persistent through all manner off stuff including games/music/films etc.

    RMA time?

    Re: Sound issues.

Try adjusting the PCI Express clock drive in bios. Optimized default is 900mV, safe mode default is 700mV. You should only test values between these two imo. I had crackling on an Asus D2X which was solved by dropping from 900mV to 700mV.

    Re: Sound issues.

So i went into the BIOS and there isn't a clock drive option anywhere (strange given most other boards I've used have).

I reset to defaults/optimal in the BIOS, rebooted and now 5.1/192kHz appears to be working fine - but i pretty much tinkered with a few settings after resetting to how they was before so now I'm baffled lol.

And now i want to nail the issue down!

    Re: Sound issues.

My guess is a certain app or game will bring it back. I had the same issue with my old D2X, tried a ton of drivers (both official and un-official) but had to settle for 96KHz.

Still, 96KHz should be enough unless your headphones cost more then your PC

Funnily enough i think it only kicked in after i downloaded CoD4 off Steam yesterday, that shouldn't make it kcik in for all other media though should it?

    Re: Sound issues.

TBH, I can't remember if I had to restart the PC after it happened or just close the app that triggered it......I will have to dust the spare PC off and have a look (its in storage atm).

    Re: Sound issues.

I had a strange problem with my Xonar DS (PCI), long version: installed a PCIe USB3 card to try it out and it worked but the sound card effectively disappeared from Windows, not visible in device manager etc. Anyway, removed the USB card and it appeared again so just ignored it. Next day, booted the PC and a very loud, distorted version of the Windows jingle played, glad I wasn't wearing my headset! Tried a few other sounds and they were all the same, thinking it might have been the op-amp, I put the speakers into another port (to bypass the amp) and ran the 7.1 test - it sounded normal again. Booted up into Ubuntu and everything was normal. Then I moved the card to the other PCI slot and everything worked OK again in Windows. Strange! I think Windows just takes a dislike to certain configurations for no apparent reason, I remember having a similar problem a while ago with a NIC, again solved by swapping slots.

Aye, that was pretty much what happened. I rebooted and heard it all distorted but jsut thought Windows was having a moment, but it was the same in every application.
