    Well, I haven't seen any.

One thing concerns me. Most SATA drives are IDE drives with a chip that acts as a bridge, so if you slap a SATA>IDE converter on there you're going IDE>SATA>IDE, hehe.

Not entirely sure what you mean.

Why do you want a SATA to IDE adapter when the drive is a SATA drive?

You mean you want to sit it in a 5 inch (optical drive) bay instead of a IDE bay?

In that case yes you can buy a mounting device to place an IDE (three and a half whatever inch) device into a 5 inch bay.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

No, he wants to put his SATA drive in an external drive enclosure. They tend to have a Firewire/USB interface, and on the inside an IDE connection, hence he needs a converter.

Thinking about it, if a converter did exist, would you be able to fit it all in?

My motherboard has a bracket for running SATA drives externally, maybe there is a solution that can make use of that?

Unfortunately the reason I want to do this is because I am getting a laptop and want to just use my current desktop hard drives in external enclosures. As I am sure you can guess, the laptop does not have SATA
