Slower overall, except for titles that have a massive preference for nVidia cards. If you need an nVidia card then they're comparable.

Ok thanks, I will stick with the 5870 then, I was just a bit confused because yesterday all the normal places I buy parts from were selling the 5870 and then today they seem to have all stopped selling the XFX card that I was going to buy, which was the only one reasonably priced. Any idea why this is? Thanks

Ran out? They aren't making the 5870 any more because its successor (6970) was out some time ago.

It seems that I can't find a 5870 anymore, which gpu would you recommend in it's place in the £150 - £200 price range? Thanks

6950 1gb, or if you play nVidia games a 560ti.
