Aaaaagh, new build woes! This is why people buy prebuilt!
I'm sitting on the couch with a nice Woodford Reserve & coke or else I might be jumping out of a window!
My new build specs are below:
K9A2 Platinum
2 x 1GB OCZ DDR2
AMD 9850
2 x 5830s
I got it all working together with an old HDD, it booted fine, got into windows and I installed the AMD drivers with 1 card in the rig. Did the usual reboot a few times then decided to pop the other 5830 in..
Ok, so the second slot (of the 4) edges near to the power switch, a qwuick check and it looks ok so I install it, now I realise I've only got 2 x PCIE connectors and each card needs 2, after a bit of faff I switched PSUs with my existing rig's (NorthQ 800W) and now the thing won't even POST, no beeps, nothing..
It powers on, fans/HDD start up but nothing, If i hit reset or hold power (the buttons on the motherboard) nothing happens, I have to tuirn off via the PSU.
The molex is inserted into the mobo & the other adapters inserted.
I've removed it from the case to check for shorts
I've tried one 5830 (tried both)
I've tried using the other PSU
I've tried all PCIE connectors (modular PSU) and even molex to PCIE adapters = the same
I've reset the CMOS, reseated EVERYTHING inc CPU
I've tried swapping with known good RAM
I'm stumped, the only thing I can think of is a dead mobo or CPU but it worked a few minutes before.
Next on my list to try is another HDD (clutching at straws I know)
My wife is annoyed as I've spent all day doing this so please help save my marriage ;)
HELP!!

Re: Aaaaagh, new build woes! This is why people buy prebuilt!
Go back to basics, unplug everything, one stick of memory, one graphics card, orginal PSU. Does your motherboard have a speaker for beep codes? Get it firing up with minimum hardware then add.

Re: Aaaaagh, new build woes! This is why people buy prebuilt!
One gfx, one stick of RAM, my 'good' PSU, mini speaker plugged in = no beeps or boot.
After starting it up I have to power down using the PSU, it WON'T power on again until I have turned the PSU off, the mobo power LED dies and THEN turn the PSU back on and press the power button.
No external power/reset switches plugged in, just using the mobo ones.

Sounds like the board is dead. Do you have the 8 pin 12V connector to the board connected? (I am sure you do). You could try reseating the CPU but I doubt that will do anything.

It's 4 pin & I have my PSUs 8pin to 4 pin via an adapter in there :)

Could easily be a dead proccy though

Re: Aaaaagh, new build woes! This is why people buy prebuilt!
It seems like either but I've no idea how it would have happened :(
I don\'t fancy sticking my X6 in the mobo to test it! Could stick the cpu in my good rig though, is that gonna be dangerous?

Re: Aaaaagh, new build woes! This is why people buy prebuilt!
Only scenario that makes sense in my head is that at some point during the PSU swap you blew the board or the processor.
I take it you don\'t have spares of either to test with?
And I presume that the RAM/PSU etc works fine with another mobo?

Definitely wouldn't risk the X6 :surprised:
I can't see why the CPU would kill the good rig, unless there was a very bizarre fault with it, but I'd wait for someone else to back me up there rather than taking it as gospel!

Re: Aaaaagh, new build woes! This is why people buy prebuilt!
RAM is fine in my other PC, I tried using the other PSU earlier but no joy.
Gotta be the board or CPU, I can't think of what else I can try short of testing those 2 things! Anyone got a cheap AM2 chip they want to risk? ;)

CPU works fine, so it looks like the board is dead for some reason, damndamndamn that throws a spanner in the works as I'll need to get another crossfire board :(

Did you try clearing the BIOS ? Battery out for a few minutes or so.

Any beeps? Ram in properly? like oolon said I also think the board is dead, when my board died I had all the same problems you are now having

No beeps whatsover, tried with just CPU/HSF installed and still nothing, guess I need to find a new board!

Sounds like the CMOS to me. Tested the battery?
