Could I stick a P4 in my Emachines?

I am on my 1.7 gig celly, It suports 533 mhz P4's so could I stick my 3 ghz in it? Nothing could hapen to it right?

P.S. I know it wouldn't run at 3Ghz But this celly is killing me!

Just buy a cheap second hand 2.4/2.8ghz p4. You wont notice a difference with the fsb being lower and they are alot cheaper

it should take a 3.06GHz (533 bus) Northwood P4 fine.

doubt it'll take an 800 bus chip though

it's worth checking to see what exactly emachines are using as a motherboard, my experience with them showed they like to use SDR memory on their P4 systems, though means of dodgy chipsets.

using SDR memory on p4 is... well... bad. check, make sure it's got PC2100 in it before spending your money - otherwise a better buy would be a new motherboard & DDR RAM

check the PSU label too. They might have a dodgy 200W PSU that MIGHT NOT handle the 3.06Ghz.

But if it handles a 533FSB you should be able to plop in at least a 2.8 (533FSB) part and run fine. If its an older chipset it might not be able to use the HT on the 3.06 so it may be a waste to buy it.

But worse case it wont boot or will be unstable. If either of those occur put back the old CPU or get a slower CPU with out HT, like 2.8 or 2.66,2.53 etc

I just need to speed it up till I get my main rig running againg, I tried my ram and now the mobo is running at PC 133 It's suposed to be at DDR 2100! It uses a Intel 845G Chipset, Even bios won't fix it!

My bad, It benchmarks in at 1000 Mb/s! Used to be at 3500 Mb/s! Dont know why?

Thats almost impossible to drop that much.

Plus I dont think an 845G will get 3500Mb/s Thats more like a dual channel DDR266/333 mobo.

My 845PE gets like 2400Mb/s with DDR333 and a 2.53Ghz chip.

PC2100 on an 845G (with out integrated graphics) should be about 2000Mb/s, now maybe you unchecked the buffered benchmark. But have you looked inside you case. Maybe you have SDR PC133! And thats why you're getting 1000Mb/s which is about what it should be.

DDr 2100, I never had any problems till I tried my old ram from my P4 system in it. now it is detected as PC 133 SD! And my timimings were tweaked just alitle to get 3500 MB/s!
