How to move Program files folder to new partition?

    Hi,
I have a new 160GB HD and have partitioned it into 3.
10GB for Windows XP, 50GB for My Documents and the rest for Program files.

When WinXP Pro installed, it placed some program files into the C: partition, but i want them in another partition (D: )with all the other programs i will install.
How can i move the Program files folder in the C: partition to the D: partition?
Also, is it possible to setup windows to automatically install programs to the D: partition?

    Many Thanks.

Hmm no you can't really move them unless you want them to stop working, but, why would you want to? Why don't you accept it as read that these are Windows related programs, installed on your Windows drive, and then install your programs on D:?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

I'm going to take the simple route and say unless you reinstall the programs, you can't do it.

Even then, some things just have to be in C:\program files (well that's not technically true, but doing it any other way would be rather tricky and prone to problems.)

    Sorry!

Some programs will work (all you have to do is update the shortcuts), but others will fail completely, it's pretty hit and miss.

Ok, i will leave them in the C: drive then

    Now onto the other Question.

Is it possible to setup windows to automatically install programs to the D: partition?

What im planning is to have System files on C: Programs/Games on D: and My Documents on E: .

Then when i have everything that i want installed i will make a backup of the C: drive. Then If one day i add some new applications/games and i'm happy with them, i will make a new backup of the Windows partition.
This way I won't have to reinstall/reregister all the applications/games because i allready have them in the Windows system folders and registry.

    Is this worth doing?
Or should i just install everything to C: and have a partition for Data and maybe another for games.

Theoretically you could change the variable that specifies where the program files directory is, but that would mess up the files in the C:\ drive's program files directory.

This is why I said I'd take the simple way and so no, lol.

    Heh, i see now

K, i think i'll go with C: Windows and programs, D: My Documents and E: Games.

I have a 160GB HD so do you think C:20GB, D:50GB and the rest for E: would be ok?

I pretty much just use the PC for Games and downloads, not many large applications.

You CAN move program files and have it still work. Copy the whole program files directory (may need to disable SFC and use safe mode) to the partition you want, edit all the variables in the registry, as well as environmental variables and shortcuts, that link to C:\Program Files and direct them to the new directory/drive/partition. Restart and delete the old directory (once again may need to use safe mode and/or have SFC disabled).

And here's the reason why I said I'd take the simple route... lol.

While it might be worth a go - if you miss something you might spend a while scratching your head working out what's gone wrong.

Still, I'd be interested to see how easily it can be done.

I've done it, but it was rather time consuming and generally not worth it. It's also easy to screw up.

It is possible to get windows to install programs on a diffrent drive, it's a registry tweak, can't remember off the top of my head, but i've done it at home. Some stuff still installs on c:\, but all my games, etc are installed on a seprate drive.

I'll have a look when i get home tonight and let you know
