    I know Questions,questions & more Questions....Water cooling?

In my own deluded little mind I have put together a fairly decent rig, well I would have if my GPU & H100 were going to arrive.

GPU aside, I'm in a complete quandary about what cooling route to take by using a closed loop H100, I thought I was taking a safer route into liquid cooling for the first time.

The only problem they won't be in stock until end of July

As you can tell I have gone from being pretty sure of what I want to achieve to WTF do I do now?

I have a lovely 990x (in it's box next to me) awaiting a POV GTX 590 my RAM has a corsair pro cooler all kidding aside what are my best options??????

Remembering I'm completely new to water cooling & have high hopes of hitting 5GHz.

    Please help

    Re: I know Questions,questions & more Questions....Water cooling?

First of all, go an have a look over:

    http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/guide...beginners.html

Beyond that, there are hundreds more, such as:

    http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=201254

I'm sure there's even a thread here, but I really can't be bothered to look for it...

Swiftech do some nice simple and EXPANDABLE kits.

For a 990X I'd suggest a 3.120 radiator, plus the same for the GPU if you plan to put tht under water. You can use 2.120 but if you want to get over 5Ghz, then they can get a bit toasty as you exceed 1.35v. On my 970 rig (@4.2Ghz) I've finally got the temps under control and I have
2x double width phobya 1.120 rads
    2x2.120 Swiftech rads rads

Temps under load are about 70C. The machine folds 24/7 so that's to be expected...

    Kit.
Pumps and Reservoir combos work nicely - depends on whether you want something in a drive bay, or you want an internal res. The D5 from Laing is about the best pump out there.

Koolance make some damned fine drive bay reservoirs, but they cost a packet. XSPC are available more for the budget conscious. I'd personally steer clear of reservoirs with integrated pumps as I've only ever heard bad things. Also, the only one I had had a breakage and couldn;t be repaired, unlike if I'd purchased them separately.

Fans - only really one choice here - got for the 120mm Gentle Typhoons. I'd got dozens of different brands sitting around, and they're all being replaced by tyhpoons as I find them on fleabay.

Hosing - go for the widest you can afford - 1/2" or 3/8" is fairly typical.
Dont bother paying for compression fittings, but go for Barbs and jubilee clips. You can tighten them up until you are blue in the face so you are reassured, and they dont twist your tubing/hosing.

CPU block - there really is only one choice - the Swiftech XT. No questions there.

Make sure you buy plenty of hose. It's a swine having to order a meter because of the 2 metres you bought you need a piece 30 cm long, but only have 25 cm left. Best to have too much and be able to move the blocks/components in an out rather than have to fight each time.

    Sites to buy from:

    Specialtech
    OVerclockers
    Scan

All three offer free delivery as well for completing a number of posts (varies by site), which can save you a few pennies.

    Fluid:
Just use distilled water and a kill coil. Most of the dyed fluids clog up your components as the dye degrades. A t the very least they will stain your w/c bits. I've now got a pink rig due to this.... Feser seem to have stopped supplying the red that I'd used. DOH!!!

Water cooling can be done on a budget, but I'd recommend that you buy well and buy once. It;s a false economy buying sh1te.... Especially cooling a grands worth of processor.

When I get a parts list together would you mind giving it a once over?
    Thanks again

Not at all. Post it up,a nd let the other Hexites review. After all, this is a forum,a nd there are bound to be those out there who know more than me, or have had different experiences.

CPU block - there really is only one choice - the Swiftech XT. No questions there.
Gotta say I strongly disagree with that. The EK Supreme HF is ahead of the older Swiftech XT both in terms of restriction and temps. There was a little revision to the XT top I think recently, that helped boost the flow a little, but it still doesn't come close to the Supreme HF.

Besides, the new Koolance 370 is worth a look.

i was nearly daft enough to buy that, but for what will no doubt be < 1 degree over my 360 i held off (until I am next due a drain down anyway )

i know at least 1 member kitted up on a budget and ended up with some very high end kit for a very good price, 2nd hand is a good start

sadly my loops cost more than the average up to date games rig as it becomes a mission

Mostly thanks to you, to be fair. And I still haven't got round to finishing the mod

As Gonz says, if you get up to the appropriate post counts quite a few forums have for sale sections where you can pick up some "bargains" as far as WC goes: but still don't think it's going to be cheap: even getting all of my kit second hand I reckon I've spent in the region of £300 so far (not counting the extra 8800GTX and waterblock Gonz talked me into buy ), and I still haven't finished my set up (I need a few more connectors and some fans and bits: it doesn't sound much but it'll probably come up to around £50 just in random extras!). It's definitely not a cheap option. On the other hand, if you're looking for very high overclocks it's probably the right option,so don't be afraid of investing in high end kit. The big advantage of a separates water-cooling kit is that you'll likely be able to reuse a lot of your stuff over several builds: even if you need new CPU and GPU blocks, your tubes, connectors, rads and pumps can move from build to build happily enough. Also if you find that you're not getting the cooling performance you want you don't have to get rid of the whole thing and start again: you can just go for a more powerful pump, a bigger (or extra) rad, a different cooling block etc. ...

I think my main bit of advice (I'm not an expert on watercooling) is to plan everything in advance - otherwise you'll find yourself with a ton of kit to fit in your case and no idea how it's going to go in! If you want to know why planning is important, have a quick browse of my build log so far which includes a lot of waffle and discussion around various things I hadn't planned properly (which partly explains why I haven't finished the build yet!). It also contains some interesting musings from myself and various other hexites, including Pob and Gonz, on various aspects of watercooling. Don't know if it'll be helpful to you or not, but I always welcome new readers

Thanks - hadn't seen those products launched. Not sure that it's worth me looking at as it's not better than the XT by a significant factor.

    Re: I know Questions,questions & more Questions....Water cooling?

Putting a computer together doesn't phase me at all......Putting water into it does big time!

As for extra bits & planning I had three lovely parcels from scan this morning only to find after opening them my RAM comes with a cooler, so why did I also order a pro cooler....ebay anyone?

Scaryjim I look forward to reading your build log, maybe all we need to do is swap a few bits here & there.

Only three things left to get, GPU & triple monitor stand, I have a quandary over form & function it should be function but... there's always room for a bit of bling

Time to shop & see, thanks again
Have just finished reading scaryjims build log, it's enough to scare anyone back to air cooling...kidding aside I have only one question are you there yet????

Clunk has a nice handy list of several watercooling stores:

You any nearer deciding what you want to go with?

Not yet - mostly down to financial and time constraints since the new year. I may have some spare time at the end of August, so perhaps I'll get it finished before this summer's completely passed me by!

    Re: I know Questions,questions & more Questions....Water cooling?

    Sorry folks,

After looking at my budget (Very SCARY!) & my lack of experience of using liquid cooling I have taken the soft option & bought a corsair H100.

At the moment it's probably best that I get it all hooked up & running with the inevitable glitches ironed out before i take on water cooling.

One positive I've paid for x3 24' monitors & got X9, if they don't come back to me Ebay here I come.....?
    What could possible go wrong?
