    New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

    Afternoon all,

I fancied a new netbook so I've just pre-ordered/back ordered (as they are out of stock everywhere) a Lenovo Ideapad S205, sporting AMD Fusion E350 2Gb of DDR3, 250Gb HDD and Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit) on a 11.6" screen.

Interestingly it can take up to 8Gb of ram so I may take the plunge and max it out when I've had it for a month or two.

This is to replace my Asus Eee 901, which has served me well but has become a little restrictive due to the small size of the SSDs. Essentially this is for travelling with me seeing as most of my friends and family seem to live in a different conutry to me now and are adverse to cross the river severn

Does anyone own one of these already?

Also, if anyone is interested I can do a little review once I get my hands on it?

Don't own one but would be interested in the review when you get it.

    What colour are you getting?

    Re: New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

I am getting one in black, but it looks as though its black and purple.

They are £299.99, which I think is a good deal considering that you get full windows 7 and discrete graphics. An Asus Eee Pc with similar specifications will set you back another ~£150.

My order is sat "awaiting stock" from play at the moment, as I say above they seem to be out of stock everywhere so either they are very popular or they aren't making many.

I'll do a write up once I get hold of it, may test one or two games as well because I've seen a video on youtube of someone running portal 2 on one.

Was looking at one myself, seems the HD and Memory upgrades on these though require the whole upper case and keyboards to be removed.

Tempted for £299 though as a replacement to the Samsung NC10 I am still using.

    Re: New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

I was put off by having to take the keyboard etc off initially but I haven't found anything as good for the price.

the 250gb HD would be good enough for myself but I am surprised a lot more companies didn't take a leaf out of Samsungs book and actually make the memory accessible from the bottom of the case.

If anything, if I got one I would only be bumping the memory to 4GB. 250GB is more than enough for what I would be using it for. Also from reading it seems a small number of them have a shutdown issue where it will shut down but the IdeaPad stays powered on (fans, power, HD etc all running) and you have to hold the power button to turn it off fully.

Can only find the one video on youtube about it and there are links to the Lenovo forums about it but it seems to be a very small, isolated issue.

Must admit though that people are saying the netbook is dead but after using a NC10 for the last 2 - 3 years the size of the thing is a god send, been looking at other laptops atm and 13" is probably the biggest I could go now for a portable machine. As you say though, for the price £299 it's actually cheaper than what my NC10 was when it came out, its a great price for the hardware.

    Re: New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

I was considering getting a bigger laptop to begin with but I have a good desktop and this is intended for weekends away or doing little tasks that my desktop would use more energy doing.

I looked at 13.3" laptops with dedicated graphics but they are a lot more money and on the move on a small screen I'd only do very casual gaming so discrete graphics seems more appropriate. The S205 would allow me to play some old games smoothly (my eee stutters and gets very hot on things like Kotor 1), it also has an accutype keyboard so I can use to do some work as well.

Over my Eee its a huge improvement.

All in all it seems ideal for my uses, if you fancied a netbook with a little more grunt its definitely a contender. Its also something of a novelty to be able to upgrade a netbook to 8Gb I only have 4 in my desktop!

I can see that tablets are becoming more popular but I don't think they will kill off the netbook altogether there is still the niche there. Indeed, in response they seem to becoming more sophisticated providing HD through Fusion or ion chipset. I have a google nexus s and it does everything that the galaxy tab does and then some more, its just smaller. I don't think I'd have a use for a tablet as a result.

I think it's more the fact there just isn't any stock, seems to be a limited build of the laptop. Even looking at the Lenovo UK/EU online store, they list the S205 but there is no way to buy it from them.

    Re: New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

Thats true, I went to the lenovo site first hoping that I'd be able to customise one.

I think there are two or three set versions for the UK, not sure why that it? I have seen the 2Gb,250Gb HDD one and a 3Gb 320Gb Hdd one on a student laptop site. The 3Gb version is £30 more.

    Re: New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

I've seen the $499 version on the stateside site that has the 500GB HD and 4GB memory or you can pay a little more and get a 750GB one I think. I reckon in the EU you will see the 2GB 250GB version only in the majority.

I think Lenovo will be doing a build to order on them. Wonder if netbook sales have dropped significantly to justify a low build run and then build to order.

Last I checked it didn't have discreet graphics - it has a fusion APU so it's still integrated, just integrated into the CPU instead of the chipset!

All the analysis I've seen suggests that PC shipments in total have dropped, and that part of this is tablets cannibalisaing the sales of lower-end portables i.e. netbooks. Also people don't really know much about the AMD Fusion APUs since they're very new tech (and I'm not sure how good the availability of the chips themselves is)...

    Re: New laptop: Lenovo ideapad

Had an email from play saying its going to be a while...

    Might get this one instead

    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/3227/24...archtype=genre

    Opinions?

Its £24 more but it does have more ram, a bigger HDD and its a 7,200rpm one rather than a 5,400rpm one.
