    fan controllers and fan speeds

    evening guys,

got one i need a 'lil refreshing on. put my new water loop last weekend and all good. now i have 3 scythe gentle typhoon 1450's connected to a lamptron fc6 controller. all hooked up ok, although i'm not currently using the temp sensors - will fit them at a later date.

now the issue is that the controller only get the fans upto 1260rpm. now iirc the 1450's are rated at 0.049A according to the stickers on them, the lamptron is upto 20w per channel.

so working on the formula of .............volts*amps=power

    so with that being 12v * 0.049amps = 0.588 watts...............am i missing something or is that correct?

so the lamptron has a capacity of up to 20w per channel and one fan per channel so should have no probs ramping up to full speed.

any ideas as to why this may be? anyway that the pots maybe to blame? not sure as when turned all way down they go to zero and the fan stops, turn it all the way up it spins up but only to 1260

no great shakes at the minute but a bit puzzling esp if i need to ramp them up.

there was a thread not a million months ago where this was discussed iirc it may have been lord jim talking about it - but i can't find it now

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

well you could rule out the fans as the problem by putting them on a motherboard header and checking the speed in speedfan?

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

well you need to remember that it only changes the input voltage so if you have 3 fans daisy chained then the voltage would be shared, probably wrong about the last bit but just a thought.

could it be possible you bought a different version of the GT fans? as theres so many version and also its possible that the reported rpm is out a bit, its only 190rpm off which is like 15%.

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

+1 on plugging at least one of the fans into a mobo header to see if it spins faster. It if doesn't spin any faster then it's the fans - manufacturing variance maybe (maybe they are GT1150s shipped by mistake?). If they spin faster then your controller is likely not running them at 100% despite what it's set to - I have seen that in the past where "full power" is more like 11 volts than 12.

well it's not that important at the moment, i should have remembered when i noticed when i had it out assembling it. but was more distracted getting the air out of the loop. but now it's right under my desk and it's a bit heavy and cumbersome to get out so meh............it can wait.

each fan is on it's own header on the controller though, so it should be more than able to run them at max. well the loop does an admirable job of keeping the cpu down to about 42°C @ 99% load when mining , but although 190rpm isn't much it's like you said best part of 15%.......i want it back

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

ah well ignore me then as i thought you had them daisy chained . However it could also be both the variance in the voltage from the fan controller and the variance in whats reported and the actual fan speed of the individual fans.

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

well managed to get in to it, and they are defo GT1450's. but the way i've loomed the cables means that i cant unplug one to plug in to mobo header without pulling it out and getting inside to cut some zippy's out.

....................oh well another thing to sort out ---------along with trying to source another block in place of the ek cock up

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

Use a multi meter to check but if the controller has electronics and is powered from the same connection that provides the output voltage, the controller may use some voltage up to power its self resulting in the lower speed. If the output pins read 12 v( rather than say 11v ) then I do not know.....

Re: fan controllers and fan speeds

There is the possibility that the fan speed isn't being reported correctly.
