We could restart the bench thread but would need someone to have a Google spreadsheet open so people can edit it. Lack of time kind of scuppered the last effort! :(
Re: Hexus HandBrake charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??
I\'m up for running through some benchmarks again. Maybe we should have another go at picking a few videos, trying to find a combination between high/low resulution and different types of content.
As I think I said in the past, a wide range of benchmarks would be even better but would be off-putting unless we can come up with a scripted way of doing it.
Scaling videos would be another thing we could test but I imagine the CPU overhead of decoding is relatively minor, so 1080>720 vs 720>720 probably wouldn\'t be much different in terms of performance.
A Google Spreadsheet is a good idea, but maybe with white-listed editors rather than a public one to prevent trolling, obviously.
Re: Hexus HandBrake charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??
I wouldn\'t mind mind hopping on the bench-wagon, the first one was a little before my membership here.
I\'d also be happy to be part of the editing team.
Re: Hexus HandBrake charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??
OK, so...
Video ideas?
Big Buck Bunny is an obvious choice as it\'s a decent length and freely available. There are a couple of other similar projects but IMO we\'re best trying to find a mix of different content types i.e. film/animation.
As for settings, simpler is of course better but Handbrake\'s default \'normal\' profile isn\'t something I\'d normally want to use as it has some non-ideal x264 settings, but again adding too many changes could put people off. It\'s another area some sort of scripting could help massively, but would take a fair amount of work to set up.
Re: Hexus HandBrake charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??
Does handbrake have a command-line interface? If so, setting the options should just be a case of creating a batch file with the appropriate switches attached, no? Might even be possible to pre-package the Handbrake installer, video files and batch file to run the benchmark ... will have a ponder and see if I can come up with something....
Re: Hexus HandBrake charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??
Yeah Handbrake does have a CLI. My only concern with packaging stuff is potential licensing issues. I don\'t think there\'d be a problem with Handbrake itself, but we\'d have to be careful to choose videos which are freely re-distributable. Not to mention finding somewhere to host it all.
Alternatively, we could include something like wget/curl and script the downloads too! :P
