Aspire One (D257) - Joy and sorrow
Recently purchased myself an Acer Aspire One on a whim after seeing it for a good price in a store locally.
It's my first Netbook and since I lost my iPhone i've been without any kind of internet device to call my own for a while now. So far so good and i'm really quite pleased with it. It's really, really light weight and performs well to boot. Perfect for carting my pictures and music around with me as I travel and great for saving on internet cafe's and so on.
I'm thinking of buying a 2GB RAM upgrade because I think 1GB is cutting it a little tight, especially running Windows 7. Can anyone clarify whether this will be a worthwhile mod? For example if I choose to run Skype it might take 4 or 5 seconds of thinking time before it brings it up on the display, after that it runs as per usual.
Also, my only other gripe is that the resolution is/was limited to 1024x600... That 600px vertical limit is really quite restricting and although I managed to unlock other resolutions with a registy edit, squeezing 1024x768 into the 16:9 aspect ratio makes for squashed images. Ideally i'd like to be able to run at 1280x800 or something close if that's at all possible? Anybody have any ideas on how or if this is possible with tinkering?

In terms of memory, 2 gig will be better. But it all depends on usage and how many things you have open at once. For the price, I'd just buy it now.
In terms of resolution, you are basically screwed, as there is only every going to be 600 pixels vertically.
When browsing you can cheat in firefox, using zoom out and full screen. This will give you more 'area' and makes things more like a 1024x768 screen.
After that, it's buying a new machine.
