2.5" ide converter ?

Im pretty much kitted out now to cover any job that i get asked to do, however today when fixing an old dell laptop with a 2.5" ide drive i realised i had no way of connecting it to my pc for backup.

Any idea where i can get a convertor from ? For sata drives i use the PCB out of an old icy box external caddy lol.

although mine is StarTech brand, you just pop sata drives in the top or pull off the rubber cover and plug in the standard 3.5" IDE ribbon cable and power lead or the combined 2.5" PATA ribbon cable&power lead.

You can get a PATA to IDE ribbon & molex cable seperately so you can just plug it into a normal IDE slot on a motherboard.

I just use a little adaptor that plugs into the 2.5" drive and I can plug a molex power plug and a PATA cable into it. It cost about £2 from Ebay.

Like the simple adaptor I linked to but with a length of ribbon cable between the two ends.

The big advantage of thoes quick ports is that it sits on your desk, works via USB, so you don't need to go digging around inside your pc to plug stuff in and it's al hot swappable so no need to turn you pc off to switch drives.

If thats the case you would still need to drag a molex out of the system, even if using the quickport..?

No because the quick port comes with a short IDE and power cable

The quickport does not run purely off the USB power it needs a seperate power adaptor

Yes you still need to turn off the Quickport, plug the IDE cable into the front and turn it back on again.
But that's a heck of a lot less messing around than turning off you pc, opening it up, plugging in the IDE cable, turning it on, going into the BIOS to make sure it doesn't try to boot off the newly installed hard drive . . . etc

If you regularly need to get data off diferent types of hard drive these boxes are an absolute god send.

Is there any of these IDE and S-ATA to USB devices that have an internal power transformer?

Can understand the Kama Connect doesn't, but the more bulker quick port style would benefit from one less item to carry around

I haven't seen any. There is a good reason for this too; with an internal power supply, each product in the range needs to go through the electrical safety certification and testing. With external supplies, only the supply needs testing so you can use that on as many different models as you like without re-testing anything. Add to that they will usually out source the supply production.
